The Evolution of The Last of Us: Season 3 Takes a New Direction
Following the dramatic events of Season 2, it comes as no surprise that the upcoming season of The Last of Us will take a distinct turn. Catherine O’Hara has hinted that Season 3 will focus on Abby’s narrative. Now, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have officially stated that Kaitlyn Dever’s character will be at the forefront.
The revelation came during a Last of Us Emmy consideration event in New York, as reported by THR. Dever, who joined the panel via video link, playfully pretended to be shocked by the announcement. Druckmann shared his astonishment that HBO was supportive of the new direction for Season 3. He said, “Initially, I was convinced they would reject our proposal for the new season,” Druckmann explained. “However, they embraced the unique aspects of the storyline, granting us not only the necessary time but also the creative liberty to explore these new avenues, which I believe the audience will truly value.”
Anticipating Changes in Season 3
During the discussion, Mazin also touched on the decision to end Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel, paralleling the narrative of The Last of Us Part II video game. He articulated that the series isn’t merely about vengeance but rather explores themes of mourning and loss: “How are we to experience real grief if no one significant to us perishes?” he posed.
In other discussions, Mazin humorously reassured upset fans that Pascal isn’t actually deceased, pointing out, “he’s in literally everything else.” The showrunners have also previously discussed alterations made for the television series, such as modifying a key confrontation involving Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) and sparing the life of Alice the dog. Additionally, Dever has expressed interest in featuring a flashback episode that delves into Abby’s relationship with her father, reflecting a similar backstory shared between Ellie and Joel.
As of now, HBO has not yet announced the release date for Season 3 of The Last of Us.
