Brett Greenstein and Collin Daniel, the dynamic duo behind Greenstein/Daniel Casting, have played crucial roles in assembling casts for popular TV series like Hulu’s “Shrill” and Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever.” However, according to Daniel, their current endeavor with the Netflix romantic comedy “Nobody Wants This” marks a novel milestone. “This is by far the most successful show we’ve been a part of, and witnessing its global popularity has been exhilarating,” Daniel remarks.
The brainchild of Erin Foster, the series features Kristen Bell and Adam Brody portraying an unlikely pair — she is a secular host of a sex podcast, and he is a Rabbi. Despite their apparent disparities and the doubts from their friends and family, the couple experiences an instant connection. The core of the show revolves around the dynamic between Bell and Brody, who have previously collaborated in “Scream 4”, “CHiPs”, “Some Girl(s)”, and “House of Lies.” The series also showcases talents like Justine Lupe as Bell’s sister and Timothy Simons as Brody’s brother, along with seasoned Broadway figures like Tovah Feldshuh and comedian Sherry Cola playing pivotal roles.
Celebrating two decades of partnership, Greenstein and Daniel emphasize the advantages of their collaborative approach in casting. “Casting can be quite subjective, and having two perspectives really aids in evaluating auditions more thoroughly,” Daniel explains. Greenstein adds, “We have a great deal of respect for each other’s insights, and discussing different views on casting or business decisions always enriches our process. Fortunately, our tastes and visions are often aligned, which smoothens decision-making.”
Discovering “Nobody Wants This” and the Decision to Join the Project
Collin Daniel: The project was brought to our attention by producers we had previously collaborated with — Steve Levitan, Danielle Stokdyk, and Oly Obst. After reading the pilot script by Erin Foster, we were immediately interested and pursued the opportunity vigorously. The prospect of shaping a new world across ten episodes was particularly appealing.
Initial Casting Decisions and Setting Priorities
Brett Greenstein: Kristen Bell was already on board when we joined. Our main task was to find the perfect Noah, as the show heavily relies on the interaction between the two protagonists. Despite a global search lasting several months, Kristen’s early suggestion that Adam Brody was ideal for Noah proved correct.
Daniel: After extensive auditions and considering multiple candidates, we revisited Adam Brody. Compilations of his previous work with Kristen showcased their remarkable on-screen chemistry, which ultimately led us to offer him the role.
The Importance of Chemistry in Casting
Daniel: Having Kristen and Adam already cast allowed us to organize chemistry readings with other actors for the roles of Morgan and Sasha. It’s crucial to witness the actors’ interactions firsthand, and fortunately, the chemistry was evident during auditions with Justine Lupe and Timothy Simons.
Challenges in Casting Specific Roles
Greenstein: Casting Sasha was particularly challenging. We auditioned many talented actors, but none seemed the right fit until we saw the dynamic between Adam and Timothy Simons. Their ability to improvise and play off one another confirmed we had found our match.

Advice for Actors Auditioning for Greenstein/Daniel
Daniel: Actors should come prepared, understanding the script and show’s tone. Making bold choices can be beneficial, especially for main characters. We appreciate when actors add their unique touch to a role, providing a fresh take while staying true to the script.
Greenstein: We look for actors who can embody the character authentically, making strong, clear decisions during their audition. Many external factors can affect casting decisions, so we encourage actors to focus on delivering their best performance and then letting go of the outcome.
Daniel: Even if you aren’t perfect for the current role, a memorable audition could lead to future opportunities with us. We’re always on the lookout for actors who make a lasting impression.
