Controversy Arises Over Poorly Painted Baldur’s Gate 3 Miniatures
A recently released collection of pre-painted miniatures from Baldur’s Gate 3 by WizKids has stirred up quite a storm online as disappointed fans found the figures poorly detailed and barely resembling their beloved game characters. The dissatisfaction has grown to such an extent that the company is now issuing refunds to disgruntled customers.
The D&D Icons of the Realms: Baldur’s Gate 3 set, which includes characters such as Astarion, Karlach, Gale, Shadowheart, Wyll, Lae’zel, and the popular undead character Withers, was expected to be a hit among fans. Promotional images from WizKids showcased well-painted miniatures, but what customers received was far from what was advertised. An example of the disparity was highlighted by Larian artist Elodie Ceselli on the social media platform X:
What I ordered VS what I received. Only Gale has a decent face. It’s expensive for a 5 years old painting work… Shame on you @Wizards_DnD pic.twitter.com/JcMCBhtRpt

Additional images shared by other purchasers reflected similar issues, showing a general lack of consistency and quality in the paintwork across the entire range. Although pre-painted miniatures are not typically known for museum-level craftsmanship, the quality of these figures was notably subpar, prompting WizKids to offer an official apology and refunds.
WizKids released a statement on their website expressing regret over the incident: “Please accept our sincerest apologies for the frustration and disappointment these quality issues caused our customers,” the company stated. “We, too, feel the same as the final product did not meet our expectations or that of our Wizards of the Coast partner.”
In response to the backlash, sales of the BG3 miniatures have been suspended. WizKids is taking steps to prevent similar issues with future products and reprints. For those particularly upset by the quality of the miniatures, the company is not only offering refunds but also the option for customers to request replacements that are up to the expected standard.
This incident has highlighted the importance of quality assurance in collectibles and the impact of fan feedback on product development and customer satisfaction. WizKids is working diligently to rectify the situation and restore trust with their customers and partners.
