A decade prior to its successful adaptation into an HBO series, the original “The Last of Us” video game concluded on a grim note with Joel making a controversial choice regarding Ellie’s fate, a decision that resulted in considerable violence. This pivotal moment has sparked extensive discussion among fans and serves as a key driver behind the narratives of both The Last of Us Part II and the upcoming second season of the HBO series. Neil Druckmann, the game’s director, recently addressed a long-standing question about the game’s ending: Was it actually possible for the Fireflies to develop a cure by sacrificing Ellie?
Druckmann stated on the Sacred Symbols podcast (as reported by IGN), “Could the Fireflies make a cure? We intended that the answer was ‘yes,'” acknowledging that the scientific underpinnings of this premise are subject to scrutiny. “Sure, our science might be a bit questionable, and people are indeed questioning it now. However, we believed they could achieve a cure, which poses a profound ethical dilemma regarding Joel’s actions.”
The rationale behind Joel’s decision to prevent the Fireflies from using Ellie to create a cure was driven by his paternal love for her, viewing her almost as a daughter. Opting to save her, Joel ended up killing all the Fireflies present in the hospital, a choice that had significant repercussions for him later on.
In the same interview, Druckmann also touched upon the potential development of The Last of Us Part 3, suggesting that it could be a possibility if the team at Naughty Dog can conceive a compelling narrative worth exploring. Regarding the HBO adaptation, Druckmann, along with co-showrunner Craig Mazin, hinted that Season 3 will explore the character of Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever), whose father Joel killed in the hospital incident. Mazin has expressed that a fourth season is crucial to fully complete the story arc they have started, although only the third season has been officially confirmed by HBO so far.
