Marvel Makes Frank Castle the Punisher Again

In a move to revitalize the Punisher series, Marvel has announced the return of Frank Castle in a new role starting September 2025, following a previous iteration where another character took over his duties.

Frank will be featured wearing his signature skull logo once more in an upcoming five-part series titled Punisher: Red Band. True to its name, this series will explore themes of intense violence and mature content, and will be packaged in a polybag to handle its explicit nature. Below, you can find a preview of the artwork from the first issue in the attached slideshow gallery:

The creative team behind Punisher: Red Band includes writer Benjamin Percy and artist Julius Ohta, who have previously worked together on the Hellverine miniseries. The debut issue will showcase a primary cover by Marco Checchetto along with alternative covers by E.M. Gist and Mike Zeck.

Marvel provides the following official synopsis for the series:

Prepare to dive back into action, True Believers – Frank Castle returns with no recollections, armed to the teeth and fueled by a relentless desire for revenge. This journey for truth will unfold exclusively in a Red Band series! Expect an onslaught of gunfire, a surge of bloodshed, and a palpable fear across both innocent and corrupt denizens of New York City at the mere mention of THE PUNISHER!

“Frank Castle—the relentless avenger, the terror to all who perpetrate evil—is a character I’ve always held in high regard, and I’ve eagerly awaited the chance to write for Punisher,” Percy explained in a press release by Marvel. “With Frank returning to his menacing black attire in a Red Band narrative, expect nothing less than the extreme. I am fully committed to delivering a raw and intense depiction of my favorite niche: wild and dangerous psychopaths. Prepare for unbridled chaos on the streets. Julius Ohta will bring this visceral tale to life with his striking and formidable illustrations.”

This reinvigoration of the Punisher series marks a departure from its recent portrayal. In a 2022 comic by Jason Aaron, Jesus Saiz, and Paul Azaceta, Frank was depicted as a supernatural agent for The Hand, but this storyline left him disillusioned and abandoned by his resurrected wife, Maria. His final appearance had him in Weirdworld, safeguarding orphaned children after his safehouses were destroyed and his thirst for vengeance quenched.

Following that narrative, a new Punisher series emerged with David Pepose and Dave Wachter at the helm, featuring ex-SHIELD agent Joe Garrison as the new Punisher after a similar tragic loss. While Garrison has made several appearances in the Marvel Universe, it seems he will now pass the Punisher title back to Frank.

Amid ongoing real-world controversies surrounding the misuse of the Punisher symbol, this storyline shift could potentially address these issues, as hinted in the Daredevil: Born Again series where Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle confronts NYPD officers misappropriating his emblem.

Punisher: Red Band #1 is slated for release on September 10, 2025.

In related news, Benjamin Percy is also preparing to conclude his current project, Predator Kills the Marvel Universe.
