Dragon Age: The Veilguard Star 'Absolutely Devastated' Over Backlash, Says People Wanted to See BioWare Fail

Alix Wilton Regan Shares Thoughts on Dragon Age: The Veilguard Controversy

Alix Wilton Regan, known for her role in Dragon Age, recently expressed her thoughts regarding the mixed reactions to the release of last year’s game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard. She attributed the negative feedback to certain groups who hoped to see the game, or its developer BioWare, fail.

In a recent interview where she discussed her extensive career voicing various video game characters and her upcoming role in Microsoft’s Perfect Dark reboot, Wilton Regan reflected on her experience as BioWare’s Inquisitor. Despite her fond memories, she doubts the character will make a return.

Wilton Regan expressed her sympathy for BioWare, feeling heartbroken over the polarized responses the game received. “I genuinely believed it was a solid game, simply showcasing BioWare’s unique style,” she commented. She also speculated that some of the harsh critiques stemmed from individuals with malicious intent online.

The game faced significant scrutiny at its launch, with some critics labeling it as “woke” due to its inclusion of a non-binary companion and options for players to select a transgender identity. On the gaming platform Steam, Dragon Age: The Veilguard currently holds a ‘Mixed’ rating, with tags such as “LGBTQ+” and “politics”.

Wilton Regan criticized the premature judgments of the game, questioning how anyone could fairly critique a game—or any media—prior to its release. “It’s an absurd approach,” she stated.

Shortly after its launch, EA, the game’s publisher, announced that Dragon Age: The Veilguard had not met their sales expectations by a significant margin, which led to the departure of the game’s director, Corrine Busche, and layoffs within the BioWare team.

BioWare confirmed in January that they released the final update for The Veilguard, with no plans for further content. Despite these setbacks, Wilton Regan remains hopeful about BioWare’s future projects. “I have only ever wanted the best for BioWare and its team, whom I deeply admire. I’m confident that their future endeavors will showcase their exceptional talents,” she said optimistically.

Currently, a downsized version of BioWare is developing Mass Effect 5, though a release date has yet to be announced.
