The study of Pokemon biology has evolved into a fascinating niche of pseudoscience, captivating audiences with detailed explorations into the characteristics of beloved Pokemon. In a remarkable extension of this fascination, Japan and Nintendo have initiated the Pokemon Fossil Exhibit. This unique display features meticulously crafted replicas of Pokemon “skeletons” presented next to genuine dinosaur fossils. Having captured the interest of many across Japan, The Pokemon Company has recently announced that this exhibit will make its North American debut in May 2026.
Set to be hosted at the Field Museum in Chicago on May 22, 2026, this will mark the exhibition’s first appearance outside of Japan. Currently, the exhibit is showcased at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum in Katsuyama, Fukui, and will soon move to the Benex Dinosaur Museum in Nagasaki.
“Upon visiting, attendees will encounter striking Pokemon models positioned alongside ancient lifeforms from the Field Museum’s own collection. This includes scientific casts of dinosaurs like Sue the T. Rex and the Chicago Archaeopteryx, which will be displayed adjacent to Fossil Pokemon such as Tyrantrum and Archeops,” the museum shared in a release. “What differences and similarities will you notice, Trainers?” they teased.
Although traveling to Japan may exceed the budgets of many enthusiasts, and with the Chicago exhibit still a year away, there is an exciting opportunity available now. The Pokémon Company, in collaboration with the Toyohashi Museum of Natural History, offers a virtual tour of the exhibit, allowing fans to explore the displays from anywhere in the world.
