Joe Don Baker, a distinguished character actor recognized for his roles in action movies, Westerns, and James Bond films, has passed away at the age of 89. Reports state that he died on May 7 and leaves behind a small circle of close friends.

Born on February 12, 1936, in Texas, Baker completed his education at Groesbeck High School and North Texas State College. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years, he moved to New York City to follow his dreams of acting on stage.

His television career began with a minor role in the 1965 Western series “Iron Horse.” He made his film debut in 1967 with an uncredited role in “Cool Hand Luke.”

Memorable Roles and Career Highlights

Joe Don Baker gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Buford Pusser, a wrestler-turned-sheriff, in the 1973 movie “Walking Tall.” His career spanned several decades during which he took on numerous roles in a variety of genres, including appearances in three James Bond films: “The Living Daylights” (1987), “GoldenEye” (1995), and “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997). He also featured in popular films such as “The Natural” (1984), “Fletch” (1985), and Martin Scorsese’s remake of “Cape Fear” (1991).

Among his other notable film appearances were roles in “Reality Bites,” “Mars Attacks!” and the television movie “Poodle Springs.”

On television, Baker’s presence was felt in the mini-series “Edge of Darkness,” and he had a recurring role on “In the Heat of the Night.” He also appeared in “Eischeid” and guest-starred in classic TV shows like “Gunsmoke” and “Lancer.”

Baker retired from acting in 2012. His final performance in the film “Mud” (2012) earned the ensemble cast the Robert Altman Award at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Joe Don Baker’s personal life included a marriage to Marlo Baker in 1969, which lasted 11 years and did not result in any children. According to his obituary, he is survived by family in his hometown of Groesbeck, Texas, who will fondly remember him. He also leaves behind a small group of devoted friends who will deeply miss him.

A funeral service is scheduled for May 20 in Mission Hills, California.
