The Raincoats’ Gina Birch Announces New Album, Shares “Causing Trouble Again”: Video

Gina Birch from the iconic band The Raincoats is set to release her second solo album titled Trouble, available from July 11 through Third Man Records. This release follows her 2023 album I Play My Bass Loud, and debuts with the lead single “Causing Trouble Again.” Watch the music video for the new track below.

Birch took on the role of director for her latest music video, collaborating with Dean Chalkley. Featured in the video are numerous notable figures including Ana da Silva, Birch’s fellow co-founder of The Raincoats, as well as Neo Naturists artist Christine Binnie, singer-songwriter Amy Rigby, X-Ray Spex’s Lora Logic, painter Daisy Parris, visual artist Georgina Starr, author Jill Westwood, artist and activist Bobby Baker, costume designer Annie Symons, and British photographer Shirley O’Loughlin among others.

Birch shared her thoughts about the creation of the video:

“After listening to Bob Dylan’s mention of a ‘white ladder all covered with water,’ I became fascinated with white ladders. I decided to incorporate five white ladders, three of which have seven rungs. It only dawned on me later that this could symbolically refer to Jacob’s Ladder, bridging Earth to heaven, although initially, I was more intrigued by the ladders as a metaphor for progress and ascent. I envisaged a choreographed sequence involving four of us with these ladders, exploring how we can move with them—whether in harmony, conflict, or dance.”

“I also drew inspiration from the wind scene in the film ‘The Colour of Pomegranates.’ My aim was to feature as many women artists from the ‘Women in Revolt’ exhibition as possible, having them be mischievous or simply yelling ‘Causing trouble!’ Ultimately, I invited all the artist musician women I knew who were available for the shoot. It turned out to be an amazing gathering of incredible women, many of whom were meeting each other for the first time.”
