‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is inviting its audience to experience the time warp once more as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.
This year, the iconic film reaches its 50-year mark and will be honored with a special release in 4K Ultra format, available in cinemas and on Blu-ray.
Originally released in 1975, the film features Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as an engaged couple who encounter the peculiar Dr. Frank-N-Furter (played by Tim Curry) at his castle after their car unexpectedly breaks down.
The film, ‘Rocky Horror,’ was adapted from a musical written by Richard O’Brien, who also co-wrote the screenplay with director Jim Sharman. Producers Lou Adler and Michael White brought the project to life.
Over the years, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ has become renowned for its unique midnight screenings and the lively participation it encourages from its audiences.
In its remastered form, the film will feature a refreshed logo with the iconic lips emblem now adorned with a golden top hat marked with a “50” in red, celebrating the milestone.
The restoration, which took ten months, was carried out by Walt Disney Restoration. Kevin Schaeffer, Director of Restoration & Library Management, expressed his honor in preserving the legacy of such a pivotal film. He noted the restoration in 4K was intended to respect the film’s original vision and dynamic spirit, enhancing both the visual and auditory experience for new and returning viewers.
Producer Lou Adler reflected on the unexpected longevity and impact of the film stating, “When ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ first came out, nobody expected it to last this long, certainly not for 50 years. What started as a modest, edgy venture has evolved into a worldwide celebration of uniqueness, community, and artistic expression. This anniversary celebrates the dedicated fans who have kept this spirit alive for decades.”
