Fountains of Wayne Announce First Shows Since Adam Schlesinger’s Death

Fountains of Wayne, the beloved power-pop outfit, is set to return to the stage for their first performance since the passing of their bassist, Adam Schlesinger, in April 2020. The group will make their comeback at Milwaukee’s renowned Summerfest on July 4th, sharing the stage with artists like Benson Boone, the Lumineers, Chicago, and Porter Robinson. Taking up the bass in place of Schlesinger will be Eve 6’s Max Collins. Details of the Summerfest lineup can be seen on the event’s promotional poster.

Additional Upcoming Performance

Later in the year, on Friday, September 26, Fountains of Wayne will also grace the stage at the Oceans Calling Festival located in Ocean City, Maryland. Information and promotional materials for this event are also available.

Adam Schlesinger’s death due to COVID-19 complications at the age of 52 was a significant loss to the music community. He was not only a central figure in Fountains of Wayne and Ivy but was also a prolific and highly esteemed songwriter for various films and TV shows. Schlesinger’s exceptional talent earned him three Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and nominations for several other prestigious awards including the Academy Awards, Tony Awards, and Golden Globes. Following his passing, numerous tributes celebrated his life and work, including a special covers album, livestream reunions of Fountains of Wayne and the cast of That Thing You Do!, and a star-studded tribute concert held in 2021.

A Long-Awaited Return

This upcoming performance at Summerfest marks Fountains of Wayne’s first public show in 12 years. Their last studio album, Sky Full of Holes, was released in 2011, after which the band took a hiatus beginning in 2013. In a nod to their enduring fan base, the band reissued their 2003 hit album Welcome Interstate Managers, which includes the popular song “Stacy’s Mom,” on vinyl in 2021.

Although the band had briefly come together for a livestream event at the Jersey 4 Jersey benefit show in 2020, where Sharon Van Etten stepped in on bass and backup vocals, it was not a public live performance. They also released a rendition of “Hackensack” featuring Van Etten, to support the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund during this period.

Fountains of Wayne’s return to the stage is a significant event for fans and the music community, offering a moment to celebrate the band’s contributions to music and to honor the memory of Adam Schlesinger.
