‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Post-Credits Scene Explained: What’s Next for Cap Ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

Please note: This article reveals crucial plot elements from “Captain America: Brave New World,” currently showing in cinemas.

Once again, Captain America triumphs in saving the globe but faces a subsequent challenge: reuniting the Avengers.

In his debut as the lead in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson, who follows Chris Evans’ portrayal of Steve Rogers, stars in “Captain America: Brave New World.” In this installment, he successfully thwarts the formidable Red Hulk, portrayed by Harrison Ford. Yet, a post-credits sequence introduces Samuel Sterns (played by Tim Blake Nelson), known as the Leader and a notorious adversary of the Hulk, suggesting looming dangers from the multiverse within the MCU.

As the film concludes, it is unveiled that Sterns was behind the creation of special heart medication for President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Ford), which secretly contained gamma radiation. This concoction transforms Ross into the Red Hulk whenever he becomes enraged. This sinister plan by Sterns is motivated by revenge against Ross, who contributed to his transformation into a grotesque green scientist with an oversized brain.

Following a destructive showdown at the White House, Captain America subdues Red Hulk/Ross and incarcerates Sterns. Ross also surrenders himself and opts to face imprisonment for his violent outbursts as Red Hulk. This leads to speculation about who will assume the role of U.S. president during Ross’s incarceration, a question that remains unanswered. However, a brief appearance by Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, hints at his burgeoning political career as he steps into a role as a U.S. congressman. Although he will appear in the upcoming “Thunderbolts” film, it seems he will join a team of anti-heroes or villains rather than pursuing politics.

In a post-credits scene, Captain America visits the imprisoned Sterns at the Raft, where Sterns ominously predicts the emergence of other worlds that will pose threats to Earth. This revelation introduces Captain America to the concept of the multiverse, which has been previously explored in MCU films like “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and “What If…?” and will soon be featured in “Fantastic Four: First Steps.”

This scene sets the stage for the upcoming “Avengers” films, “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” expected to amalgamate numerous characters from the multiverse. Intriguingly, Robert Downey Jr. is slated to return to the MCU in these films, portraying the supervillain Dr. Doom instead of Iron Man, adding a twist to the narrative. The forthcoming “Fantastic Four” movie will also introduce an alternate universe featuring its key superheroes: Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing. It remains to be seen how Captain America will collaborate with this new team to tackle the menacing Dr. Doom and whether he can gather Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in time to defend the multiverse from this formidable threat.
