Interview With Dyro!

Dyro Sunburn

One of the most respected artists in the dance music realm today, Dyro has come a long way ever since being discovered by Laidback Luke on his forum. Having made his Indian debut at Sunburn Goa in December last year, the Dutch electro prodigy returns to the Indian subcontinent to make his Sunburn Arena debut in Mumbai on the 22nd May (Sunday).

We had a chance to catch up with his to discuss his upcoming music, his opinion or albums versus single, his record label WOLV Records and much more. Read on!

TBB: You made your India debut last year at Sunburn Goa. How was the experience like playing for a massive crowd on the mainstage?

Dyro: It was a great time! There’s nothing like playing in new places and being able to have such a great reaction from the fans.

TBB: We’ve all noticed your recent shift in sound which explores darker territories of electro and everything in between. Talk us a bit through your shift in direction.

Dyro: As an artist it’s important to constantly grow. I have always wanted to go a little darker and more bass heavy so now is the time… Really excited to put out all the new music and collaborations I’m working on out to the world.

TBB: You’ve been labelled as a nerd when it comes to music production. How has your creative and technical process inside the studio developed over the years?

Dyro: Well, I guess that’s a great thing. I take my production and music extremely serious, yet have a lot of fun doing it. I really look to drill down and fully understand the software and plug ins I use when working. Its important to always work on your craft.

TBB: While electronic dance music still remains a single-driven market, artists seem to have brought back the concept of narrative-driven albums in recent times. With the likes of Steve Angello, Eric Prydz and more leading the way, do you think people will consume albums in their true form or are they to switch back to the evergreen concept of singles/EPs being put out every now and then?

Dyro: Everything is still very new, but since I started releasing music things have progressed so much in the way that the consumer listens to music. I think whether putting out a concept album versus singles or EPs just depends on what the artist is feeling at the time and how they want to get their expression out. As a consumer myself it’s great to sit down and listen to a full body of work. Currently for me I’m focusing on releasing singles in the near future.

TBB: Are there any dream collaborations waiting to happen?

Dyro: Lots of things on the horizon. You will find out soon.

TBB: Your very own label WOLV Records is a fresh breath of air for the dance music scene and fans alike. Where do you envision the label to be in the next few years?

Dyro: We are dialing things in and putting great focus in to a few really awesome artists. Our goal is to put out great music and help our artists reach all levels of success.

TBB: Do you think there’s whole lot riding on you, given how you’ve been successful to spread your sound amongst the masses, which has put focus back on you as an artist and a label head?

Dyro: Hmm. I really do not think in that way. I focus on the music/creative and work with my team to get the best possible outcome. All wins, small or big, are still wins!

TBB: Your debut EP ‘Set Me Free’ had a whole lot of hip-hop and trap influences embedded in it. Is this en route to become a staple feature in your music?

Dyro: 100%. I love playing around in genres

TBB: Coming back to you, what can expect from Dyro for the rest of 2016? Any collaborations or singles to watch out for?

Dyro: I have a bunch of new music in the works and some really special collaborations. Stay tuned.

Dyro plays at the Pleasuredome on 22nd May, and you can buy your tickets from BookMyShow.
