Being the final stop in his debut India tour, Delhi was all geared up to see Skrillex live for the very first time. Having already been declared as a sold out show, the fans were quite stoked to witness the Dubstep maestro, as well as the opening act Mija, along with Nucleya, Grain + Jitter, and Su Real.
However, it is known that everything has a pro and con, and our experience of Skrillex’s Delhi show was no different. There were plenty of memories created, some which we would wish to forget. Look on below for the Hits and Misses and reminisce in what has been!
1. Visual Production
From the visuals to the lasers, streamers, confetti, pyrotechnics and fireworks, the visual production for the show was absolutely on point, and one of the main strengths throughout the tour.
Verdict: Hit
2. Venue
HUDA Grounds, having earlier hosted the likes of David Guetta, Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy, Korn, Enrique Iglesias amongst others, hosted Skrillex this time. While the venue looked fine at the initial stages during the opening sets, once the crowd started coming in, it started looking more and more congested. We honestly believe a bigger venue would’ve been much better.
Verdict: Miss
3. Opening Acts
Su Real, Grain + Jitter, and Nucleya were given the responsibility of opening for Mija and Skrillex, and they did not disappoint! With Su Real and Grain + Jitter playing fine warmup sets, it was Nucleya who brought out the madness in the crowd, with tunes from his latest album, Bass Rani, and some of his older tracks!
Verdict: Hit
4. Mija
A lot of people were looking forward to see Mija in action, and she brought her A-game to the fore. Dishing out proper basslines, track after track, Mija kept the crowd on their feet, with some people even preferring her set to Skrillex’s.
Verdict: Hit
5. Skrillex
Where do we even start about Skrillex’s performance? The man relentlessly dropped bangers, one after the other, including previewing a new track, constantly interacting and dancing with the crowd, jumping from the console and what not. Highlight of the show? Definitely and obviously!
Verdict: Hit
6. Sound
One of the most essential aspects of any gig, be it an open air arena gig or a club gig, is the sound. A great sound set up can not only immensely improve your experience, but it’s also definitely easy on the ears. We however cannot say the same for the sound set up for Skrillex’s Delhi gig. Occasional sound drops somewhat marred the experience of the gig.
Verdict: Miss
7. Crowd
It’s needless to say that it’s tough handling a sold out show with a crowd eager to watch one of the biggest electronic music acts of our time. However, a section of the crowd at the show did not do themselves or their reputation any favour by acting rowdy, misbehaving with women or pushing people at the front, ruining the experience for most. It does not say much when even Skrillex had to tell the crowd to take it easy in between his sets.
Verdict: Miss
8. Management
While the entire process at the box office and entering the venue was rather smooth, the show could’ve done with added security at the venue, who would’ve been better enabled to handle the crowd, and everything that ensued.
Verdict: Miss
We’re pretty sure that the ever hard working team behind Vh1 Supersonic will ensure that their next event goes smoothly without any glitches.
