Germany is known for a lot of things: great cars, solid engineering, closest descendants of the Aryan race and of course TECHNO MUSIC! The latter has been a genre of music so deeply imbibed in its roots that people identify to it as a way of life. Germany’s capital, Berlin, is home to the most legendary club of all time: BERGHAIN (pronounced: Berg-Hine). Music lovers world over have Berghain on their bucket list and it’s one of those items that is much harder to achieve than you may think all thanks to one man Sven Marquadt.
The tattooed face doorman is notoriously famous for being the toughest bouncer to get past, all depending on his mood. People have tried everything from wearing the best clothes to wearing all black. From speaking only German in the queue or not speaking at all. But 99 times out of 100 all these efforts are in vain when Sven “politely” asks you to step aside, after standing in queue for hours (and we mean HOURS!).
Sven and Berghain have developed a somewhat cult following, which has resulted in books and guides being published on how to crack the code to enter Berghain – our advice? don’t waste your time and money on those as they’re pointless and inaccurate.
Sven, 52, recently sat down in a tell all interview with GQ Mag where he discusses his childhood (before the taking down of the Berlin Wall), his other job as a photographer, how he got into the music scene, what Berghain is all about and he reveals (albeit reluctantly) how he chooses who to let in! You can read the entire interview here. It makes for a good read and hopefully provides insight in helping you get into Berghain in your next trip to Berlin!
