ZHU, the man shrouded in mystery ever since ‘Faded’ came into spotlight, revealed new details about himself, his upbringing and his history in the music industry in a recent interview with the L.A Times.

Having already revealed his real name (Steven Zhu) last year, there were a lot more revelations in the interview with the L.A Times. He grew up in San Francisco, but is now based out of L.A and started out in the music industry as a ghostwriter for producers. He however didn’t reveal the artists he wrote music for, just mentioning that the tracks were “nothing big”.

Talking about his music, he said:

This project is all about art, and we try to make it all about the songs and the response. Being able to have everyone focus back on music is the first step. But the second is to have influence and have people care.”

One of the reasons behind ZHU‘s mystical persona is his approach towards talking about his music and sound design, rather than himself, and the sentiment has been shared by his manager Jake Udell of Th3rd Brain and Zhu’s indie label Mind of a Genius, who has been very essential in building up and revealing ZHU.

The interview comes up at a perfect time, just before the Grammy Awards, with ZHU having being nominated for the ‘Best Dance Recording‘ for ‘Faded‘.
