Martin Garrix Tops Beatport Charts Whilst Deep House Takes Over

With 2014 finally drawing to a close, Beatport’s served up its annual census of the year, where we find out who made it to the top and who didn’t. As a major market for DJ’s, Beatport’s charts always shed light on the trends of the past year.

2014’s chart topper comes across as quite a surprise. Contrary to the belief that a Hardwell/Heldens main stage production would be #1, Defected’s universal’s house anthem, “Pushin’ On” by Oliver $ and Jim Jules made it to the top. Of course, Oliver Heldens’ “Gecko” stands at #2, followed by Robin Schulz’s remix of “Waves”. Aside from those, we have a scintillating combination of mainly non commercial productions such as Shiba San’s nasty “Okay”, Ten Walls’ masterpiece “Walking With Elephants” along with a dark remix of “Crossfade” by Maceo Plex. Even Sasha makes an appearance with a fabulous remix of London Grammar’s “Hey Now”.

Funnily enough, the presence of big room bangers by Spinnin’ Records and such do make their way into the chart, but they’re quite comprehensively overshadowed by non commercial material commanding the top 10. This is probably a strong indication of the times to come. Based on the trends of the last two years, deep house is still Beatport’s #1 selling genre of the year.

However, despite the overall popularity of deep house and techno on the charts, when it comes to the artist roster, Martin Garrix takes the #1 spot followed by Hardwell, Oliver Heldens, R3hab and David Guetta. Seems like the commercial dance force is still strong, seeing the names on these charts!
