Raves are fun but leaving one without all ten of your fingers, not so much. A similar tragedy took place with the 16 year old British teen, Josh who decided to ‘skank on until he couldn’t skank any more’ at an illegal rave in London, losing his pinkie finger while going hard.
The rave that took place at an abandoned mail sorting office of Croydon, London was made to accommodate a crowd of some hundreds but was swarmed by thousands of partygoers determined to tear it up. After a failed attempt by the police to evacuate the area, the post party consequences that came forth were grave, including the demise of a 15 year old and many others being taken to the hospital due to injuries and illness.
Josh, 16, too snuck into this rave with his friend ‘Fraser’ with an intention to have a good night of drum ‘n’ bass but the night took a bummer of a turn for them.
Well, at about 1AM we were up in the house room, but I don’t really like house so I was waiting for the drum ‘n’ bass to kick in. As soon as I heard it, me and my mate went down there. Five minutes in, the fire alarm starting going off and everyone was like, “Rip it off! Rip it off!” So I thought I’d give it a go. I was completely sober at the time. I jumped up, grabbed it and my little finger got caught in the case because it was all broken, and as I came to rip it back down, my little finger got ripped off completely.
But the little accident didn’t stop this kid from raging in the moment, ignoring his severed pinkie that obviously needed all the paramedic attention it could get.
Well, what can you do? There are fit girls around you, the bass is hard, the music is popping. I didn’t want to be the sore thumb sticking out – or the sore pinkie – so I was like, “Fuck it, let’s skank on and enjoy it.
Though eventually, he was taken to the hospital with the help of his friend and the paramedics waiting outside. Josh still hasn’t given up on the idea of raving and would be present at the next rave in London in July, as he told Vice magazine in an interview. What happened to the severed finger, you may ask?
It pinged off into the crowd. I got told later that a bunch of stoners found my little finger and were playing catch with it.
You may have had a history of wild nights to your account but they will never be as wild as this kid’s (and we sincerely hope they aren’t either).
