In what can be described as a giant leap in the era of Live-streaming events, Internet giants Yahoo team up with live-events company Live Nation to bring 365 live stream concerts over a 12-month period. Yahoo’s chief Marketing Officer Kathy Savitt announced during Yahoo’s Newsfront presentation to potential advertisers and sponsor’s about the collaboration and the vision the two companies have. Yahoo, with close to a billion unique visitors monthly, will look to capitalize on its vast abilities to customize and target a user’s experience on any screen through digital magazines and in Savitt’s words, give them something to look forward to on a daily basis.
There’ve been a lot of attempts in the past to launch events online in more of a one-off or episode nature. This is the first time, at scale, where two behemoths are getting together and saying, ‘Live is the future, and we’re gonna create a daily habit for music fans.’
Yahoo targets late June – early July to kick off this ambitious project, as they search for the right sponsors, that will create the efficiency solutions, helping underwrite the significant costs of streaming a live concert every day for a whole year. Meanwhile, Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino insisted on the wide variety of acts that will be delivered through this platform as he envisions acts who play Live Nation clubs and theaters, to the arena-sized Grammy winners, to its growing roster of festivals in rock, country, EDM and other genres. Infact, he even hinted at kicking off the venture with Beyonce and Jay Z’s “On The Run” stadium tour, when he teased, “A stadium tour with Jay Z sounds like a really great live event!”
With Live Streaming Events generating an audience of their own over the past couple of years, one has to admit that this venture could not have come at a better time. Given the pace of artistic and technological innovation, production teams have taken live streaming to the next level with highly produced free and pay-per-view couch tours, raw and authentic studio sessions, live audience interaction, and more. With more festivals being broadcast Live than ever before, projects such as these which come into fruition centered around streaming, the barriers within the live digital market continue to recede.
