In a recent encounter with The Guardian, Skrillex, aka Sonny Moore, became all idealistic. Well known for speaking up about topics that concern him, the 26 year old producer/dj took time to opine “this dance music thing is not a bubble. Because it’s not about dubstep, or techno, or house, or any other sound: those things coexist and support each other.”
Addressing the notion of EDM as tipping, Sonny added “It’s not like when grunge or nu-metal or whatever became the new trend and everyone was chasing one sound and that scene turned in on itself and lost what it had to begin with. There’s room for everything.”
It’s a matter of fact these days as you edge out to make something other than what your fan-base expects, may be even a little bit dissimilar you will be immediately proclaimed as ‘sold out.’ So right off the bat, Sonny has made sure that he would never be tied down to any genre, and we all know how successful he has been. It’s to be kept in mind, while we dig ourselves in any good genre argument and discuss the merits of niche sub genres down to the fine details we put significant emphasis to not forget that dance music is a huge, magnificent and flourishing whole made up of many different parts.
