Music forms an integral part of each of our lives. For most of us, it’s as important as oxygen. Without it, we would suffocate, wither and die. More often than not, many of us have heard the phrase: Music Saved My Life
Now, Brandon Ross, a filmmaker, is exploring the depths of these four words, and exploring the idea of music as a form of therapy. In his upcoming documentary, Before We Were Kings, he introduces a handful of producers in a revealing and vulnerable light. Music greats, Moby, Sander Kleinberg and Wolfgang Gartner amongst several other music producers, come together to shed their celebrity avatars and speak to the healing powers of music.
“[Before We Were Kings is a] documentary with the ambition of focusing on someone who has difficulty blending into social settings, but takes up the art form of DJ’ing as a hobby … The filmmakers believe music can be just as helpful as Xanax to someone who has anxiety or depression. Through our research over two years, we have learned that music has been helpful to those on the Autism Spectrum, with speech impairments, or stroke victims. We believe in the POWER of music and think that MILLIONS of other people in the world do as well.”
Before We Were Kings has already received partnerships from Music related institutions and welfare centers such as the Nordoff Robbins Center for Music Therapy at NYU and the American Music Therapy Association as well as the Ibiza non-profit organization Last Night a DJ Saved My Life and DJ School, but is still looking for financial and media support to aid in the film’s completion. The project has reached out via Kickstarter and explains that though the documentary will be made “by any means necessary,” and that travel costs for location filming have pushed the filmmakers to seek additional financial funding.
Financial donations will be rewarded through the project’s Kickstarter with clothing, vinyl, and other merchandise, but Ross’ company, Ross Moving Pictures, also encourages supporters to spread the word about both the documentary and Music Therapy through social media.
