For Sanaya Ardeshir aka Sandunes, making music is a process that is spirited, uplifting and genuinely free from artistic plagiarism. Curating melodies that are meticulously crafted and yet retain a deep emotive sense within them, her sonic terrain has evolved over the past year to include her vision into uncharted territories. Known for producing tracks that fall into the genre of “post-dubstep”, “future garage” and “garage tech”, the Mumbai based hot-shot producer has fast transitioned from ardent newcomer on the scene to a distinguished front runner in underground Electronica. And now she puts together a special remix collection called ‘Ever Bridge remixed’, featuring 6 of her tracks which have been reworked, all with a touch of ingenuity, by 6 upcoming producers from all over the country. And the best part…she’s giving it away for free!

Sandunes had an exclusive chat with Mumbai Boss, where she insisted that while her music can be technically categorized into EDM, it shouldn’t be confused with ‘commercial dance music’.

People don’t seem to understand that EDM is actually a really broad term. It encompasses a whole range of genres. But I choose not to [call my music EDM] because otherwise I’m expected to play music which sounds like David Guetta or Avicii, which I don’t do fortunately or unfortunately. This year it dawned on me that labeling the music into genres was a bit of a stupid thing to do. Because I am still exploring different sounds. I come from a piano playing background so I can’t help but have tendencies to blend things and merge things within my sound. It’s very difficult for me to say it’s this genre or that genre. Electronica is broad enough to span everything from Zero 7 and The XX to stuff as dance-y as [that of] any house producer.

She also spoke about the influence of London based dubstep artists Burial and Mount Kimbie, and further delved into details about her own sound direction.

He’s (Burial) an influence definitely. Definitely a very big influence is Mount Kimbie. I think they’re really, really, really fantastic. They’re in a space that didn’t quite exist before they created it. The emotion of their music really cut through. It was very soulful music, they didn’t refrain from throwing in vocals and guitars into weird formats and using them electronically, [and] using things as instruments that wouldn’t [typically] be used as instruments…I was in London when this whole garage resurgence happened. I was like, ‘Holy shit, I’ve never heard anything like this before’ – funky jazz chords, slightly discordant samples of hip hop. It’s all kind of jazzy and you can tell that the producers are musicians who have become producers. And I think that was very characteristic of garage. And I was really lucky because my tutor and my mentor used to be part of a garage project called Dub Conspiracy, which became quite big.

The remix pack features remixes by some of the hottest talent in the country. With her track ‘Won’t you‘ being remixed by Delhi based When Pandas Attack, vocals and additional percussion elements taking the Garage step genre in a new direction. ‘Holding on‘ featuring the vocals of Megan Murray has been given a fantastic rework by animated producer Pippin, with an eclectic version infusing many elements of Electronica. Ayan De aka Paralights appears as the remixer behind the orchestral ‘Perfect Fit‘, infusing elements of trip-hop and heavy bass kicks to alter the sonic realm on the production. Sarvesh Shrivastava from Mental Martians solo project called Sickflip explores various facets of Dubstep through his portfolio and with his remix on ‘Won’t You‘, we see a slice of everything synchronously combined into a toxic mixture! Mumbai based Nanok comes up with a classic dancefloor rendition for ‘Good to you‘ as he twists the vocal loops and uses them as patterns and layers in his musical arrangement! The final remix is by Delhi based Frame/Frame with a poignant rework of ‘I Would‘, as his emotionally captivating soundscape lifts the track into an alternate dimension with a meticulously crafted production that includes heavy bass dabs accompanied with some charging industrial percussion.
