Martin Garrix, a trance DJ?

What’s a genre anymore, really? Clearly not too many voters in this year’s International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) perhaps know the answer to that question.

Now, IDMA is an annual awards ceremony held during the Winter Music Conference in Miami and this year includes a large pool of 57 different categories ranging from Best Global DJ to Best DJ Software. Fans and professionals within the industry both, are allowed to vote in order to nominate who they deem worthy of these different titles and according to IDMA, every year there are more than “two million votes from music enthusiasts in 209 countries and territories” which contribute greatly to the wide array of nominees.

This year it seems however, that the array of nominees may have been a little too wide considering Martin Garrix has been nominated for Best Trance DJ and it’s surely safe to say that Garrix’s style of music is pretty far away from your typical ‘trance’ sound. Other nominations in the category consist of some remarkable names such as, Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond, Dash Berlin, Gareth Emery, Markus Shulz, Mat Zo and W&W.

In all fairness to Martin, it wasn’t his fault for being nominated as it was his fans that decided to write his name down on the ballot in large numbers. An equally puzzled, Garrix took to twitter to express how bewildered he was and said,

Well all said and done, whatever happened, someone clearly dropped the ball on this one. Be sure to tell us your thoughts in the comment section below.

  1. Mat Zo, Gareth Emery and W&W aren’t Trance either. A&B and Armin also aren’t really Trance anymore. And Dash Berlin are just pop music. Probably one of the worst Trance DJ polls I’ve seen!

      • Haha, I’ve actually just looked at the other nominations;

        Animals is up for best Progressive House(!?). Actually, none of those tracks in the list are Progressive House!
        Avicii? Really?

        The Best Trance Track is just as bad. No offence to Americans but I really wish they hadn’t start classifying music genres totally wrong.
