Bassnectar remixes Underworld’s classic “Rez”
Taking on UK electronic music pioneers Underworld, bass music stalwart Bassnectar reworks their seminal track “Rez” from back in 1993.
This stupendous remix was first premiered by Bassnectar on a 360-degree rotating stage in Nashville on New Years Eve and interestingly, Lorin chose this remix out of his entire catalogue of admirable bass music for the culmination of the midnight countdown.
If that doesn’t immediately solidify your opinion of this track, then you clearly haven’t seen Bassnectar live. Effortlessly integrating the famous “Rez” melody, the remix employs impeccable percussion work and a gargantuan dubstep drop.
With the superb remix Bassnectar pretty much gives us one legend remixing a classic track of another making this record a must have. Definitely one track you would love getting your hands on. So without further delay, hit play now!
Sander van Doorn & Mark Knight V Underworld – Ten [Preview]
Here comes a big one. An absolute bangin’ one. Toolroom Records have certainly crossed many milestones in the past, and this year they reach an accomplishment that is quite applaudable, 10 years. That’s right, blow the candles, Toolroom Records will turn 10 this year and they certainly know how to celebrate.
EDM giants, Sander van Doorn and Mark Knight have teamed up with English electronic band, Underworld, to create something absolutely spectacular, ‘Ten’. The song was previously not ID’ed as it played in various sets and has now been given it’s birth name. The name obviously stems from the 10 year celebrations that Toolroom will be celebrating and is set for a March release.
The track in itself, from what we can gather from the preview, mixes the styles of all 3 artists, beautifully mixed into one. It’s easy to spot Mark Knight‘s classic tone riding the song as it progresses. We truly believe this is one song that should hit the mark and leave a lasting impression.
The track ‘Ten’ will be out on 4th March, 2013.
Flashback: Underworld – Beautiful Burnout
It is our honour to launch a fresh section of reviews titled “Flashback” which will involve our team writing about one legendary and unforgettable track regularly to give you a run down memory lane and give life to a track which even today is talked about and heard by all or at least most of us and just refuses to die out!
Its an even bigger honour to launch this new section with the stupendous track, “Beautiful Burnout” by none other than the legendary electronica act famously called Underworld.
Underworld are an English electronic music group, and the principal name under which musicians Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have recorded together since 1980.
It also proved to be the base for one of the worlds most sought after Producer/DJ’s, the extremely talented Darren Emerson.
Hyde and Smith recruited DJ Darren Emerson, and after several minor releases and remixes as Lemon Interupt and Steppin’ Razor readopted the Underworld moniker. Following this, they produced danceable techno as a trio (“Underworld Mk2″). The addition of Emerson completed Underworld’s techno/rock fusion and seemed to moderate some of the poppier elements in the original duo’s work.
Coming to the track, Maintaining a darkly intense undercurrent throughout, Beautiful Burnout is pretty much classic Underworld; shimmering synths and pretty splashes of keys provide occasional respite from the bleakness, but the eerie pulsing of the bass doesn’t relent. Hyde’s vocals are heavily treated in effects, so much so that at times they are barely resemble a murmur but the bitter sadness underpinning the vocal melody is the most striking feature of the song.
A clever concoction of dark-yet-danceable trance with a healthy dose of angst, Beautiful Burnout isn’t a huge departure from the Underworld of yore, but hits the standards that we’ve come to expect from the outfit.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MOGUAI
We at Bangin Beats present to you an exclusive interview with Andre Tegeler – Moguai to the world , who is in Bangalore currently and is set to rip the stage apart at SUNBURN Festival, Noida day after !! Brace yourselves as we give you a peak into this genius producers mind!!
The german is one of the most forward thinking, in-demand and inspirational electronic artists around, no question about it. His electrifying ‘Lyve’ performances and pioneering studio methods continue to stun and inspire both clubbers and budding producers alike, while his sparkling discography features collaborations with some of the industry’s most prestigious A-listers. From Moby, Underworld, Royksopp and Felix Da Housecat, to X-Press 2, SOFI, The Sugababes and Girls Aloud – no task is too great for him. His debut album, ‘We Ar Lyve’, was the first release on mau5trap recordings that didn’t come from label founder and EDM icon deadmau5, which in itself is an instant seal of approval. Follow that up with hugely successful tours of North America and Asia, the release of his highly anticipated second album ‘Mpire’, a Radio 1 Essential Mix and remixes for the likes of Underworld, Afrojack and others – it’s quite clear that Moguai is operating at the top of his game. Going from strength to strength with the passing of each day, the man is simply unstoppable.
Hello! From Bangin Beats (www.banginbeatsmusic.com) and Thank you for taking out time for this small interview!
Q) To begin with do tell us the story behind the name Moguai? It is pretty cool, when did you start using it?
MOGUAI: It actually came from my sister. She was a student of architecture and as part of her course she designed a club in Barcelona. I was in love with the name and so borrowed it for a Skateboarding Company. I never actually started the business though! But, then in 1994 as a nameless DJ, it occurred to me Moguai could be my alias.
Q) You have been in the business a long time, 1994 if we’re right, how did you first break onto the scene?
MOGUAI: Really from just playing my own techno parties, then creating my own label, ‘Punx’. I wouldn’t say I broke the scene until 1998 though with the release of my single Dial M for Moguai. From there I did productions on Mau5trap and Skint for example, that’s when I knew I’d made it.
Q) You obviously have seen a great shift in the music industry since you first started, Would you say it’s bigger & better now?
MOGUAI: I wouldn’t say it is better or worse – certain areas have come on monumentally recently. There are good and bad sides to everything, as always, I just know that it’s always changing. Electronic music is definitely at the forefront at the moment. I’m extremely fortunate and proud to be a part of this.
Q) You’ve released both your albums “We Are Lyve” and “Mpire” with Mau5trap, how did the first collaboration come about? That said tell us about the relationship you share with Deadmau5?
MOGUAI: I recorded ‘LYVOX’ and thought it sounded in the same style as deadmau5, so sent it over to mau5trap and they liked it. Joel wanted a new artist to release on the label other than him that had a similar style, but was different. He’s a great guy, really talented and switched on, and we share the same tastes in music.
Q) The Fatboy Slim remix you did of “Ya Mama (Push The Tempo)” was a big success. Tell us a little more about how it came about?
MOGUAI: I am a huge fan of Fatboy’s, so to get the opportunity to put my own spin on his track was an honour. Remixes get sent over all the time and I just went for this one with all my energy. The thing is, you have to feel any remix, really get to know the melody or the beat. Luckily Fatboy is such an excellent producer that this came easy. I loved working on that track and it led to a collaboration, which was a dream come true.
Q) You have a monthly radio show on “Digitally Imported”, tell us something more about that?
MOGUAI: The show is called ‘Punx Up The Volume’ and is simply an hour of the best Electronic Music out there. The things I’m listening to, old favourites or big tracks I hear on the road. I spend so much of my time on tour that the show is a great time out, but I’m still doing what I love – provide people with great music to dance to.
Q) The new remix of Moby’s, “Extreme Ways” which you’ve just released recently, is a complete #banger. What made you select an all time dance music hit as old as that to remix?
MOGUAI: Same as with Fatboy, i’m a huge fan of Moby. However I’ll be honest in saying it was a daunting task because everyone loves ‘Extreme Ways’. So I decided to try and stay as faithful to the original track as possible. You can’t mess with those vocals and strings Moby uses!
Q) You will be coming to India very soon for Sunburn Noida, What should your fans here expect from your set? Could we expect you to drop any unreleased tracks as part of your set?
MOGUAI: They can expect a huge fresh set as always! I’ve recently done remixes for Wally Lopez, Steve Aoki and Kelly Clarkson. Also some originals that I’m keeping quiet about! I’m so excited to go and play out the stuff I’ve got ready.
Q) What are your plans for the future? Any releases or remix’s or collaborations coming out soon ?
MOGUAI: Apart from the ones I mentioned, I’m on the road mostly. Its going to be so good to be back in Asia. It might be my favourite place to play in the world. Apart from Germany of course!
Q) Your 3 favourite or as we’d call it #bangin tracks at the top of your head currently which mostly form a part of your sets?
MOGUAI: A track I did with Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike called ‘Mammoth’ ranks quite highly. It premiered on the Tomorrowland after movie video and got an excellent response. My sets and favourites change so much though! Oh but actually, the new Deadmau5 stuff is superb.
Q) Tell us you’re 3 favourite producers? Also, tell us 3 producers who you haven’t collaborated with as yet but can’t wait to work with?
MOGUAI: Wow, there have been so many awesome producers that I’ve met and listened to over my career that it’s hard to pick just 3! Steve Angello, Jacques Lu Cont and Calvin Harris are guys whose work I really admire, enjoy and who I’d love to do something together with.
Q) A word of advice for EDM portals like ours www.banginbeatsmusic.com , trying to establish a base in a budding electronic dance music market?
MOGUAI: It’s not my area of expertise but it seems like you guys have it pretty spot on already. The scene changes so much that making sure you’re up to date on the latest trends would be the most important thing.
Q) There are an increasing number of DJs/Producers springing out from all parts of India and the world, do you have any advice for them?
MOGUAI: You get so many ‘No’s’ in this business. People try to influence what you do and shape your sound in to their perception of what makes good Electronic music. If you have a vision then just stick to it!
Q) Any last words for your fans here in India?
MOGUAI: Just thank you so much for the support you guys give me! I can’t wait to return the love and play the shows.
Thank you once again for the interview, We can’t wait to catch you live at Sunburn Noida!!
