Any veteran EDM fan is well aware of who Crystal Method is. The duo that started its journey in Las Vegas, NV has come a long way. From producing tracks that were featured in the trailer for the first sci-fi banger The Matrix to being on the soundtrack for one of the most famous racing games of its time, Need for Speed Underground.

Crystal Method was playing at Prime in Boston on October 26^th, which is a club that has been bringing some big artists this year. Some that are yet to come are Hardwell and Swanky Tunes in November which we here at Bangin Beats are really pumped for.

This would be my first Crystal Method show and I sacrificed going to Major Lazer and a Diplo after-party for it and I can tell you this, they did not disappoint. Starting off the set with their ever so famous “Trip like I do”, they slowly transitioned into delivering a monster set jam-packed with some heavy bass tunes and mashing them carefully with selected electro beats that we young EDM fans love raging to.

The first of these recent hits was a track called Fire Inside by Gemini released earlier this year. After which they dropped one of the year’s biggest remixes, Zdarlight by Deniz Koyu w/ fedde le grand which was somehow mixed with a not so well-known track that I hadn’t heard but with the help of the internet’s knowledge was able to find. Released in September by German producer B-Phreak, Watch Dis was an unlikely part of their set that kept a lot of people guessing what could be expected next. The best mix of the night that was delivered to the crowd was a mashup of Nicky Romero and Zedds Human along with Kangaroo by SVD and Julian Jordan. At every moment I thought I knew which part of each track would fit but they completely surprised me with their mixing incorporating mass amounts of effects that just made it seem like the two tracks were just meant to be.

Other parts of the set were mixed in with Shake your Rump by the Beastie Boys, Praise You by Fatboy Slim and some other heavy hitters that I will attach below. The only thing I didn’t understand was the fact that I only remember hearing Name of the game and Trip like I do (which started the set) in the entire night. For someone who grew up on and started appreciating electronic music because of artists like Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and Thievery Corporation, I expected to hear a lot of the old school electronic music I went there to see. Not to say that I didn’t enjoy the performance to an extent where I had been dancing for 40 minutes straight without refreshing my drink. The best part of the night was Scott Kirkland (Half of Crystal Method) coming into the crowd and dancing with the fans, letting them try on the Lego helmet and indulging them in pictures and videos.

I think a lot of the people who were there were hoping to relive the past when these guys set the tone for EDM scene where this music started being used in mainstream media i.e. movies and video games. In the end I would say I would do it all over again and it was completely worth it. For all of you EDM fans that have recently developed a taste for the genres that we absolutely love here at The Bangin Beats, I suggest you listen to as much Crystal Method as you can.
