Spektre – Cyclic Operations [Album]

The techno brainchild of DJs/producers Filthy Rich and Paul Maddox, Spektre was formed through a mutual passion for driving electronic music and a desire to push sound boundaries using the most effective technology at their command. The coalition of their combined experience in the studio allows them to construct dark, sinister sounds mixed with twisted, haunting vocals and unnerving, atmospheric foundations, allowing them to construct their own distinctive brand of techno that defies categorization and explores an entirely different dimension like no other.

The duo weaves an intrepid, complex web among underground dance music’s elite. Sparking innovation, their melodic sound draws inspiration from early looping detroit techno from the likes of Joey Beltram and R&S releases, combined with an amalgamation of recent production masterminds such as Dubfire, Martin Buttrich, Trentemoller and Stephan Bodzin. With their tracks being released on prestigious labels such as Yoshitoshi, Great Stuff, Dekadent Schallplatten, Dance Electic, 303 Lovers and Weave, plus remixes on Craft, Audio Therapy, John Henry and Spectrum among a whole host of others, their tracks have featured on Renaissance and Umek compilations and their ‘Live At Glade Festival’ album was released via VeryVeryVeryWrongIndeed in 2009.

Spektre’s productions are supported by some of techno’s biggest pioneers including Carl Cox, Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Dubfire and James Zabiela. They have had recent features in Mixmag, DJ and IDJ magazines, with DJ mag dubbing them “the home-grown producers, tipped to give Berlin’s minimal crowd a run for their money.”  2010 saw the release of Spektre’s debut studio artist album “Casting Shadows Without Light” on their own Respekt label, which ratified to awaken the senses of any credible music lover. And now with their highly anticipated second artist album “Cyclic Operations”, released on the prestigious Toolroom Records, there is certainly no stopping this formidable partnership.

Designed to be heard more like a mix like an uninterrupted adventure, “Cyclic Operations” features a series of short musical interludes, namely ‘Introduction’ with its dark vocals, ‘Intersection’ with its futuristic, apocalyptic feel and ‘Intervention’ which is more uplifting and upbeat, thereby cementing the album into an atmospheric and all-encompassing soundscape. It’s important to point out that it’s not just 14 tracks thrown together – every element is crafted specifically and purposefully, and find its place in this puzzle of a soulful and melodic techno masterpiece. Industrial, futuristic and apocalyptic, “Cyclic Operations” occasionally delves into the darker side of the dance spectrum, while lending a more grainier and grungier sound at times as well as a feel good uplifting tones as well. “Cyclic Operations” really shows why Spektre have already received such support from the best from the Industry, as they bring forth one of the sophisticated and mature albums of the year.

Starting with “Introduction”, which aptly sets the tone for the rest of the album. A slow rumbling sound seems to transition you from whatever it is you’re doing into a melodic and hypnotic state. With haunting vocals cautiously pointing out “..some Spektre approaching..”, a recurrent drum loop and bassline kicks in.  As we transition into the first track called “Reverion”, through a series of wavepad effects and an expansive bassline, we are welcomed by incongruous pads, (which were originally a sample from an Amiga game) which forms the hook as the track progresses. A vocal sample with dark lyrics form an interesting contrast to the original pads, generating an emotive feel which spines the remainder of the track.

“Let me Tell you” has already garnered a huge buzz around it, majorly because of the dominating vocals of Montserrat. With reverb and delay effects kicking in onto the pads and basslines, the warm atmospherics along with heavily edited vocals guide us to the crescendo where all the layers and elements find their place. The track has a pure underground feel to it with a rumbling bass and an echoing organ sequence which binds everything together.

“We are one” With incessant crowd chanting in the background, and stirring vocal which include words like ‘courage’ and ‘determination’, one can only admire the driving energy encompassed within this track. Dark, strong and energetic the melody alongwith Jesse Jackson famous “Watts Stax Live” speech, which is used as the vocal sample on this track, lends an infectious energy which is sure to cause holes in one dancefloor too many!

One of the most innovative tracks on the album has to be “Turbine”. With an alternating bassline and an industrial drum loop hovering around the backdrop, the reverbing melody kicks in with filter and sawer effects. Despite having been released earlier (on Toolroom’s first Rhythm Distrikt compilation), the track still finds its place on this album as its chilly atmospherics retain the harmony of the album as a whole.

“Sense in Madness” has influences of so many genres within itself, that its almost cruel to place it under any one! With Paul mentioning how the northern trance superclubs were influences for them in their early career, an unmistakable trance riff can be found on this track. This track had a staggering 9 different versions before this version was finalized and the unison was described as a ‘labour of love”! With delay pads encompassing a kick and snare drum loop, a recurrent bassline kisses the filtered trance plucks, as the track travels across musical dimensions in the short span it finds on the album.

“Forerunner” is perhaps the quintessential big-room techno sound on the album. With a chunky bassline and heavy synths, peppered with delicious arpeggios and a heavily filtered pad, the track stands for power on the dancefloor. This one is sure to make you raise your arms and sweat it out!

“Intersection” begins with an ethereal blend of pads, synths and atmospherics. The aptly titled track switches over the feel of the album and proves as a clever break point with its dark and apocalyptic feel.

“Skuz”was designed to mirror “Let me tell you”, the track has a darker, feel-bad theme around it. Fizzy jogging synths and a looped up vocal snippet lend an intimidating aura to the album. Carelessly and effortlessly, we have shifted to the sinister universe of Techno, as the commanding vocal sample first lands into absolute silence before we are lifted once again with alien tweaks and knob sounds straight from a sci-fi epic!

“Ghosts in the machine” was one of the first individual tracks to be completed by Spektre, and they essentially curated their album around this track. While the track has enough potential to be a potent dancefloor weapon, it allows tremendous creative freedom with live shows as well. Strong, dark and hypnotic, the melodic feel of the track is overpowering and one cannot dismiss the urge to sway along to its addictive synths.

One of the most geometrically intriguing tracks on the album “Parabolica” certainly suggests Spektre’s mutual admiration for the world of complex soundscapes, as point precision with a few sections of a booming bassline melody and half-time drum patters add yet another spark to the already shimmering album. The industrial grungier sounds attacks your auditory senses like you were in a cyberpunk universe. Be prepared to fly!

By the time we reach “Intervention”, a sense of darkness has prevailed over the album, which is why its warm and uplifting tone, is a pleasant surprise. Wide and expansive pads and heavy kick drums, slow us down from the rapid pace that the album has just traveled across. A simple offbeat drum loop guides the echoing waveforms till we land onto the doorstep of the next track.

“Opus” is nothing short of a masterpiece. Inspired by the Detroit sounds of Underground Resistance and the driving techno sounds of the late 90’s, it’s clearly the most experimental track on the album. With complex percussion layers and a delightful piano melody clipping down the hi hats, the track creates a feel good atmosphere and is sure to make you smile and glow!

Ending this harmonious journey with the magnificent “Steel City Sunrise”, Spektre explained how they had been working on this idea of a vocal/piano cut-up track, and working on it tirelessly resulted in its crystallization of the perfect closing track for the album. With a pretty vocal sample chopped up with a piano edit and a deep bass line, the track fluctuates in moods before leaving the listener with those classic slick, smooth, techno vibes.

And with that, the album came to a close and the transition back to reality wasn’t as easy as going in. Spektre’s skills as DJ’s have been destructive to say the least, but they have now proved their abilities as top notch production geniuses as well. As they carefully weave their way into the future, carving out a name as leaders of dance music’s underground pack, the awesome twosome promise unrivaled aural delights and regarding their future productions and plans for the future, well, as they say “EXPEKT THE UNEXSPEKTED”.
