Julien Temple’s Johnny Pigozzi Doc ‘I Am Curious Johnny,’ Featuring Martha Stewart, Mick Jagger and More, Reveals Trailer Ahead of Rome Film Fest Bow (EXCLUSIVE)

British filmmaker Julien Temple is set to unveil his latest documentary, “I Am Curious Johnny,” at the Rome Film Festival this Friday. The film, which profiles industrial magnate, renowned photographer, art collector, and philanthropist Johnny Pigozzi, will make its debut on HBO Max on November 3rd.

The documentary “I Am Curious Johnny,” which The Bangin Beats has the exclusive trailer for below, chronicles the life of Pigozzi, a French-born heir to the Italian Simca automobile fortune, now residing in Los Angeles. Pigozzi was pioneering personal photography in the social circles of celebrities long before the rise of social media, claiming to have “invented the selfie” back in the 1970s. His photographic journey includes capturing famed scenes at New York’s Studio 54 and the Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills.

The documentary includes heartfelt accolades from celebrities such as Michael Douglas, Martha Stewart, Mick Jagger, Diane von Furstenberg, and Graydon Carter, among others. These figures have been part of Pigozzi’s extensive social network over the last fifty years. Notably, Pigozzi also possesses one of the world’s foremost collections of contemporary African art.

In his directorial statement, Temple portrays Pigozzi as a complex figure, akin to the mysterious billionaire Mr. Arkadin from Orson Welles’ famous film. Temple describes Pigozzi as having spent his life distancing himself from his wealthy yet harsh father, using his dynamic creativity as a means to carve out his own identity.

Temple further explains that for over half a century, Pigozzi has turned the act of taking selfies with his illustrious friends into an art form. Despite being a Zelig-like character who is familiar with every notable figure from Hollywood stars and rock legends to media moguls and tech entrepreneurs, Pigozzi has remained relatively unknown to the general public until now. The film delves into the themes of wealth and its impact on those who have it, as well as the pursuit of truth, sprinkled with a humorous examination of AI’s ability to fabricate alternate realities.

Julien Temple, once known as a rebellious figure within the punk scene, began his career by documenting the Sex Pistols and later transformed the footage into notable films such as “The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle” and “The Filth and the Fury.” His more recent projects include “The Eternity Man,” “Oil City Confidential” about the UK band Dr. Feelgood, “Requiem for Detroit,” and a documentary about London titled “The Modern Babylon.”

“I Am Curious Johnny” is produced by Jeremy Thomas through his Recorded Picture Company, Temple under his Nitrate Film banner, and P.J. van Sandwijk from Storyteller Productions.
