A personal aide and three ex-domestic workers of Smokey Robinson have lodged a lawsuit claiming that the renowned Motown artist sexually assaulted them numerous times while they were employed by him. The collective lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County, alleges that the assaults occurred at his residences in California and Las Vegas. The plaintiffs are seeking reparations amounting to $50 million.
The identities of the women remain confidential, but during a press briefing on May 6, their attorney, John W. Harris, disclosed that they are all Hispanic women who were paid less than the minimum wage. Harris stated, “These women were in precarious economic positions which made them particularly vulnerable to exploitation and left them with limited means to defend themselves against such predatory behavior,” as per The New York Times.
According to the legal documents, three of the women were hesitant to report the misconduct for fear it could affect their immigration status. It is also alleged that Smokey Robinson’s wife, Frances Robinson, was aware of the incidents but chose to ignore them. Furthermore, she is accused of treating the women harshly and using racially insensitive remarks towards them. The lawsuit includes allegations of false imprisonment and numerous labor law breaches as well.

The plaintiffs were employed by Robinson, who is now 85, during various periods between 2006 and 2024. One woman claimed that the singer sexually assaulted her on at least 23 occasions from May 2014 to February 2020.
A representative from the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office has confirmed to The Times that no criminal charges have been brought forward as of yet.
In response to the allegations, Smokey Robinson’s attorney, Christopher Frost, told The New York Times that the lawsuit is a malicious attempt to extort money from an aging American celebrity. Frost described the claims as “baseless and foul.” He urged the public to withhold judgment until all the facts are thoroughly examined and presented.
