Lorde Releases New Single “What Was That”
Lorde has unveiled “What Was That,” marking her first original solo release since her 2021 album Solar Power. The song’s launch was preceded by an intriguing promotional campaign featuring cryptic social media posts, voice messages, and audio clips. The cover art for the single, captured by Talia Chetrit, accompanies the song’s video which is available for viewing below.
The track made its live debut on a Tuesday at Washington Square Park in New York, where Lorde performed it by playing the audio through a portable speaker and singing along. Earlier that day, she had announced her impromptu performance to fans via a mass text, stating, “Meet me in the park Tonight 7pm – x x.” The gathering, however, was quickly dispersed by local authorities and park officials due to the size of the crowd becoming unmanageable. This event was also captured and featured in the song’s accompanying video.
Collaborative Efforts Behind the Scenes
“What Was That” is a collaborative creation between Lorde and Jim-E Stack, with production handled by both alongside Daniel Nigro. Jim-E Stack’s contributions extend to playing drums, keyboards, piano, synthesizers, and handling engineering duties. Daniel Nigro added his talents on the bass, electric guitar, piano, and synthesizer, also contributing to engineering. Additionally, Andrew Aged of Inc. No World played electric guitar on the track.
Following her 2018 album Melodrama, Lorde’s Solar Power was a highly anticipated project that featured several singles including “Solar Power,” “Stoned at the Nail Salon,” and “Mood Ring.” The album was rich with visuals, as most tracks like “Fallen Fruit,” “Leader of a New Regime,” “Secrets From a Girl (Who’s Seen It All),” “The Path,” and “Oceanic Feeling” were accompanied by music videos.
Lorde’s Recent and Upcoming Projects
Post-release of Solar Power, Lorde maintained a relatively low profile, only making notable appearances such as joining Muna on stage in New York at Terminal 5 in 2023, and contributing a cover of “Take Me to The River” for A24’s Talking Heads tribute album set to release in 2024. Last summer, Lorde’s involvement in the music scene was highlighted when Charli XCX enlisted her for a remix of the Brat track “Girl, So Confusing,” confirming Lorde as the inspiration behind the original song. The pair have since performed the remix live at Charli XCX’s concert in Madison Square Garden and at the first weekend of Coachella earlier this month.
