Horst Weidenmueller Passes Away

Horst Weidenmueller, the visionary founder of the esteemed indie/electronic music label !K7 and the originator of the renowned DJ-Kicks compilation series, has passed away, confirmed by the label on February 11. The announcement did not specify a cause of death, mentioning only that Weidenmueller had been battling a serious illness. He was 60 years old.

Weidenmueller was a native of Germany’s Black Forest and relocated to Berlin in his early twenties. It was there, in 1985, that he established !K7 initially as a company focused on producing music videos. Over time, the company transitioned into a record label, and by the mid-1990s, it was releasing influential techno and house music. Additionally, it began producing the DJ-Kicks compilations, which allowed producers and DJs to curate tracks that served both dancefloor enthusiasts and home listeners, offering DJs a platform to reach new audiences and experiment with music beyond traditional mixes.

The Impact of DJ-Kicks Series

The DJ-Kicks series kicked off with a mix by C.J. Bolland and quickly established itself as a cornerstone of electronic music culture. The series featured contributions from a host of legendary figures, turning many of these mixes into iconic staples of the genre. Notably, the Austrian duo Kruder & Dorfmeister produced the series’ second LP. Other notable contributors include Four Tet, DJ Koze, Kemistry & Storm, James Holden, and the incomparable Moodymann, each adding their unique touch to the evolving landscape of electronic music.

Weidenmueller did not limit his activities to the DJ-Kicks series; he also signed a diverse array of both established and emerging artists to !K7. His signings included A Guy Called Gerald, Matthew Herbert, and Erol Alkan, as well as artists like Tricky, and more recently, Hundred Waters and Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke.

Legacy of a Visionary

In its tribute, !K7 lauded Weidenmueller for his visionary leadership, passion, and dedication, which have been instrumental in shaping the label since its inception in 1985. His legacy is expected to continue inspiring the label’s future endeavors. Beyond his professional achievements, Weidenmueller was known as a fervent supporter of the independent music scene, a dedicated environmentalist, and a cherished friend. His significant contributions to the music industry have left an indelible mark that will be remembered for years to come. The label affirmed its commitment to advancing his vision with the same fervor and integrity that Weidenmueller himself demonstrated.
