Vacation departure turns into a nightmare
On July 5, a 62-year-old man, his wife and 22-year-old daughter were leaving Paris for a vacation in Morocco. During the night journey, the family stopped at several freeway service areas to take a break. At around 4:30 a.m., during one of these stops, the man drove off without his wife, involuntarily abandoning her at a freeway service area in the middle of the night. He didn’t realize he’d “forgotten” until he’d driven 300 kilometers.
Distress call to the police
Panicked, the driver contacted the police at around 8:30 am. The gendarmes from the Labouheyre motorized platoon in the Landes received this “rather confused call”. The man doesn’t remember the name of the freeway service area, nor the exact time of the stop.
He vaguely recalls a break near Orléans. His daughter, who was asleep at the time of the incident, cannot help him. The police mobilize their colleagues to check all the rest areas in the area.
Difficult but effective location
The search proved complex, as the family had made numerous stops along the way. Fortunately, the police were able to locate the woman using her cell phone. She was on a freeway service area in the Deux-Sèvres region, 300 kilometers away.
Taken in charge by the local gendarmerie, she had not moved since 4am. On reconnecting with her husband, she asked him to turn back and pick her up.
Investigation and happy ending
The authorities launched an investigation to verify the circumstances and ensure that the abandonment was not intentional. The evidence confirms that it really was a simple oversight. The family was finally reunited and resumed their journey to Morocco.
Unfortunately, this type of incident is not isolated: in January 2023, a man forgot his wife 160 kilometers away, and in August 2024, parents left their child at a freeway service area.
Conclusion
This incredible misadventure illustrates the dangers of driver fatigue and the importance of vigilance when driving at night. The effective intervention of the police and modern technology (geolocation of the phone) led to a happy ending.
This story reminds holidaymakers of the need to check that all passengers are present before getting back on the road, especially during night-time breaks when fatigue can play tricks on you.
