The Last Of Us Series May End After Four Seasons, Says HBO Boss

Following an intermission of almost two years, the much-anticipated return of The Last of Us is on the horizon on HBO and Max, launching the adaptation of The Last of Us Part II. While the series has garnered substantial acclaim from both viewers and critics, Francesa Orsi, HBO’s EVP for drama, has expressed that it’s unlikely the series will extend beyond four seasons.

“We haven’t finalized anything yet, but it appears we’re heading towards a total of four seasons,” Orsi shared with Deadline. “It’s premature to confirm definitively, but likely it will be this season followed by two additional ones before we conclude.”

Previously, co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin hinted that The Last of Us might span three to five seasons. The narrative of The Last of Us Part II is set to unfold over multiple seasons, taking into account that the upcoming Season 2 is slated to have only seven episodes. It is anticipated that Naughty Dog, the game developers, might introduce The Last of Us Part III eventually, though no official announcement has been made yet. Additionally, there’s no current evidence suggesting that Mazin and Neil Druckmann, co-showrunner, have plans that extend to include the events of a potential third game installment.

Mazin and Druckmann have also alerted fans that the second season will incorporate scenes that were omitted from the game due to their extreme nature. They further mentioned that the series’ timeline might not align perfectly with that of the game.

The second season of The Last of Us is scheduled to premiere on HBO and Max in April, although the exact date remains to be announced.
