The Growing Role of Generative AI in Animation
Media and entertainment sectors are increasingly turning their attention to generative AI, with the animation industry facing complex debates about how these AI tools should be incorporated into creative and production processes.
According to the latest findings in the “Animation and AI” report by entertainment data provider Luminate, animation continues to be a key investment area for production companies and streaming services aiming to captivate both adult and younger audiences. A notable example is Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters,” which achieved record-breaking streaming numbers, becoming the most-streamed original movie on the platform to date.
From Luminate’s U.S. Entertainment 365 survey, it’s evident that anime enthusiasts are also some of the most avid cinema-goers. The survey highlighted that 29% of these fans have attended three or more anime films in theaters within the past three months.
Animation’s Popularity Across Viewing Platforms
In comparison to other movie genres, anime stands out as the top category. Fans of various animation styles are also significant contributors to the usage of streaming services. For instance, 76% of individuals who use Netflix watch animated content on it. Similarly, animated content is prominently featured on Hulu and Disney+, as per the insights from Luminate.
While the interest in animation grows among major studios and streaming platforms, the adoption of generative AI within this sector is met with mixed reactions. Luminate’s report indicates that while some view generative AI as a groundbreaking technology that could streamline production processes and cut costs, others are wary of the potential downsides.
Many critics and traditional artists label generative AI as a controversial technology and express concerns regarding its implications on creativity, legality, and ethics. Issues such as unauthorized data usage, intellectual property rights, diminishing creative control, ethical dilemmas, and the potential threat to job security are fueling the debate. According to Luminate, roles such as concept artists, storyboard artists, VFX specialists, and game developers are expected to be the most affected within the next couple of years.
