Streamer Emiru Disputes Twitch's Account Of Assault Response At TwitchCon

Renowned Twitch streamer Emiru has openly criticized Twitch’s official account of an incident during her TwitchCon meet-and-greet, labeling the platform’s statement as “a blatant lie.” Video footage from the event captured a man dodging security barriers to reach Emiru, attempting to kiss her by grabbing her face, only to be repelled by a security guard.

Twitch had issued a statement claiming that the individual was “immediately” escorted out and banned from the event. However, Emiru argues that the action taken was neither prompt nor effective, and she added that Twitch personnel did not step in during the incident nor did they inquire about her condition afterwards.

During Emiru’s Meet & Greet at TwitchCon, she was assaulted. A security guard intervened to push the assailant away but then allowed him to leave the scene. Emiru returned shortly to continue engaging with her fans.

Though Twitch’s statement highlighted its dedication to safety, condemning the attacker’s behavior as “unacceptable and deeply upsetting,” it maintained that the man was prevented from re-entering the event and permanently banned from Twitch and its affiliated events. The statement also mentioned the implementation of heightened security for the remaining duration of TwitchCon, including an increase in personnel around meet-and-greet areas. Yet, Emiru’s account points to a substantial gap between the official version of events and her experience.

According to Emiru, the assailant managed to bypass several security checkpoints unchallenged and was only confronted by someone from her personal team, not TwitchCon officials. She described feeling extremely unsettled, more so by how the situation was handled afterward than the actual assault. Emiru further mentioned that several TwitchCon security officers who saw the assault did nothing at the time, and some even made light of the situation afterward. She was only made aware that the assailant had been detained several hours later, after her manager advocated for some form of action.

“None of the TwitchCon staff approached me to ask about the incident or my well-being,” she shared on social media. “A friend who was with me mentioned that after the incident, Twitch security personnel were behind the booth, making jokes about how they didn’t see what happened, laughing it off, and quickly moving on to other topics. If no one was concerned about my safety or needed anything from me, and they initially let the perpetrator escape, I’m left questioning the competence of those hired to ensure our safety at the event.”

Emiru also declared her intention to never attend TwitchCon again, expressing her dissatisfaction after being a regular participant for years. She advised other creators to think twice about attending future events, especially those who do not have their own security arrangements. As of now, Twitch has not responded directly to Emiru’s claims or addressed the allegation that the perpetrator was initially allowed to leave the scene.
