'Oscar Can Never Be Horizontal' — Conan O'Brien Reveals the Weird Academy Demands for Oscars Statues in Promos

Oddities Unveiled in Oscar Promotions

In an unexpected revelation, Conan O’Brien, who recently hosted the Oscars, shared an amusing yet peculiar encounter with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. During his creative process for the Oscars promotion, he faced unexpected restrictions from the Academy concerning the treatment of the iconic Oscar statue.

While appearing on the podcast “Conan Needs a Friend,” hosted by his Oscars head writer Mike Sweeney, O’Brien detailed his promotional concepts. He imagined a humorous scenario where he would be in a domestic setting with a 9-foot Oscar statue, treating it as his partner. However, the Academy didn’t quite warm up to the idea, especially concerning how the statue was to be positioned and dressed.

O’Brien elaborated on one of the pitched scenarios, saying, “We’re fighting about things couples fight about,” and added, “At one point, I thought, wouldn’t it be great if it’s just on the couch? Let’s lay it on a really big couch and I’ll be vacuuming and say, ‘Could you at least lift your feet? Or could you at least get up and help? Load the dishwasher?’ We wanted to do it and they just said, ‘No, no no, that can’t happen.’”

This seemingly innocent and charming idea was met with a firm refusal from the Academy, which left many wondering why such a benign concept was rejected. It turns out the Academy has some rather unusual regulations regarding the portrayal of their prestigious statue.

“One of the people from the Academy came forward and said, ‘Oscar can never be horizontal.’ And that blew my mind,” recounted O’Brien. He humorously compared the restriction to treating the statue as a sacred relic. Additionally, he mentioned another rejected idea where the statue would act as an apron-clad housewife serving leftovers, which was also turned down because the statue must always remain unclothed according to the Academy’s guidelines.

These decisions might seem arbitrary to the public, but they underscore the Academy’s stringent policies on how their emblematic statue is depicted. It’s disappointing that O’Brien’s creative promotional ideas were stifled, but fans of his humor can hold out hope that he’ll return with equally clever ideas for future hosting gigs—rooting for a Conan-hosted Oscars in 2026!
