‘Bone Lake’ Director on the Joys of Making an Erotic Thriller and Not Worrying About Prude Audiences: ‘This Movie Doesn’t Shy Away From Sex’

In the thrilling new movie “Bone Lake,” which is now showing in cinemas under Bleecker Street, themes of violence and sexuality are closely intertwined. The film begins dramatically with a naked couple fleeing through the woods from an imminent threat, capturing the audience’s attention right from the start.

Director Mercedes Bryce Morgan was drawn to Joshua Friedlander’s compelling and complex screenplay about two couples who inadvertently book the same Airbnb. As they start interacting, a series of disturbing and dark revelations begin to unfold.

Morgan described the screenplay as unafraid of embracing extremity. “I’ve always been thrilled about the resurgence of thrillers and how this film embraces sexuality openly. Yet, it’s the European-style relationship drama that truly captivates. Initially, you find yourself deeply caring for the characters, which serves as a conduit for the ensuing horror. The ability to start with that and then escalate it dramatically towards the end was particularly appealing to me,” she explained.

Although there’s a noticeable preference among Gen Z for less sexual content in media, Morgan believes that the majority of viewers will appreciate the film’s narrative style.

“It’s all cyclical,” she points out. “One moment skinny jeans are in, then it’s all about baggy pants, and before you know it, skinny jeans are back. It’s similar with film content. As a millennial, sex in movies seems normal, but younger generations might question it given other societal issues. Ultimately, those who resonate with our movie will form a passionate and loyal fan base,” Morgan suggests.

Morgan emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe and comfortable environment on set, especially concerning scenes involving nudity. “I insist on balancing the scales; if we have female nudity, there must be male nudity as well. We either all are or none of us are, aiming for equality. Also, it’s crucial to discuss why a particular scene necessitates nudity, sometimes non-sexual contexts can be even more engaging,” she explained.

Developing chemistry among the cast is vital in an erotic thriller, and Morgan fostered this by engaging the actors in an unconventional but effective exercise.

“When Alex Roe and Andra Nechita arrived on set to portray Will and Cin, one of the first activities I had them do was to dance to playful, upbeat music together. It might seem trivial, but it’s a fast way to break down barriers and get comfortable with each other physically,” she shared.

The indie film’s journey to the big screen kept Morgan motivated throughout. First introduced at Fantastic Fest in 2024, “Bone Lake” took over a year to make its theatrical debut. “Choosing a film for me means committing to it for years. While some might grow impatient, ensuring we did it right—releasing it in theaters—was crucial. Plus, discussing topics like sex and adding a dose of humor is something I cherish,” she admitted enthusiastically.
