‘Beatles’ Movies: James Norton to Play Band’s Manager Brian Epstein

James Norton to Portray Beatles Manager Brian Epstein in New Musical Series

British actor James Norton has been cast to embody Brian Epstein, the legendary manager who played a pivotal role in the Beatles’ rise to fame, in an innovative four-part musical biopic directed by Sam Mendes.

The series, titled “The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event,” promises a unique approach as it has been announced alongside Paul Mescal playing Paul McCartney, Harrison Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan portraying Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.

A Revered Figure in Beatles History

Epstein, revered by many Beatles aficionados and often referred to as the “fifth Beatle,” first encountered the iconic band in 1961 and was instrumental in their meteoric rise to international stardom. He remained with the Beatles until his untimely death from a drug overdose at the age of 32 in 1967. Epstein’s remarkable life and legacy were also captured in the 2024 biopic “Midas Man.”

Although Sony, the studio producing the biopic, has opted not to comment on the casting news initially broken by Deadline, the anticipation around Norton’s role is high.

Director Sam Mendes has taken on the ambitious task of crafting four distinct films, each from the perspective of a different Beatles member. These films are slated for release in theaters in April 2028 and are designed to weave together to tell the comprehensive story of the band’s journey from Liverpool to becoming global cultural icons, culminating in their split in 1970. Epstein’s significant influence suggests he will be featured prominently throughout the series.

The portrayal of other significant individuals in the Beatles’ story is also drawing attention. Previously confirmed, Saoirse Ronan will take on the role of Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai is set to play Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood is in talks to portray Pattie Boyd, George Harrison’s wife, and Mia McKenna-Bruce will be seen as Maureen Starkey, Ringo Starr’s first wife.

At 40, Norton has recently shown his versatility in musical biopics, having portrayed record producer Chris Blackwell in last year’s “Bob Marley: One Love.” His other notable roles include appearances in Netflix’s “House of Guinness,” “Grantchester,” “Happy Valley,” and the third season of HBO’s “House of the Dragon.”
