Tom And Jerry Golden Era Anthology Brings Classic Theatrical Shorts To Blu-Ray This Holiday

Celebrating 85 Years of Mischief with Tom and Jerry

The legendary animated pair, Tom and Jerry, are marking their 85th anniversary in a grand style this December 2. Fans of these classic characters are in for a treat as a comprehensive collection of their theatrical shorts will be released in a Blu-ray box set for the first time ever. The set, titled Tom and Jerry: The Golden Age Anthology, is now available for preorder at $60. As of this writing, this extensive 16-plus hour ensemble of cartoon escapades ranks as the top-selling Blu-ray on Amazon.

Tom and Jerry: The Golden Era Anthology

Among the newly remastered shorts included in this release are Mouse Cleaning and Casanova Cat, which are being made available for the first time in the US on home media. These particular episodes have sparked controversy due to their racially insensitive content. Initially intended for release in Tom and Jerry: The Golden Collection Volume Two, their release was ultimately canceled. However, Warner Archive has included these in several other collections over the years, accompanied by disclaimers that address their historical context and the problematic elements within.

Additional Tom and Jerry Collections Available

If waiting until December feels too long, there are other Tom and Jerry collections currently available. One notable collection is Tom and Jerry: The Complete Cinemascope Collection, which gathers all 23 CinemaScope widescreen animated adventures plus three additional cartoons. This collection showcases the animation at its finest, with each short featuring vivid and dynamic scenes, all while depicting Tom in his perpetual comedic struggles.

Each film has been meticulously remastered, boasting richer colors and clearer audio than the original VHS and DVD versions. Although the remastering process isn’t flawless, it represents a significant improvement. The three bonus cartoons created by Tom and Jerry’s original creators, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, are Good Will to Men (1955), Give and Tyke (1957), and Scat Cats (1957).

Another recommendation is the three-volume set of Tom and Jerry: The Spotlight Collection, which is currently available on DVD for a discounted price of $14.45, down from $38. This four-disc set consists of 112 cartoons, ranging from the very first where Tom was known as Jasper, to other beloved classics. While this edition lacks the audio commentary tracks found in other versions, it still includes numerous special features such as behind-the-scenes documentaries and additional scenes.

For those interested in more classic animated specials, the Peanuts: 75th Anniversary Ultimate TV Specials Collection will be released on October 7 for $85. This collection includes 40 Peanuts specials from the debut in 1965 through 2011, all remastered in 1080p. The five-disc set also features a 28-page collectible booklet filled with artwork and details about each special.
