Critical Reaction to ‘The Studio’ from Apple TV+
The Apple TV+ series “The Studio,” known for its biting portrayal of Hollywood, has been acclaimed for its realistic depiction. However, not everyone is convinced of its authenticity. A notable industry leader has criticized the show, dismissing most of its elements as nonsense, despite acknowledging a small element of truth.
“Each episode does contain a small but brilliant spark of truth that underpins powerful satire,” said Tom Rothman, CEO of Sony Pictures, in a recent discussion with Letterboxd. “While the satire itself is executed superbly, the rest of the content is largely exaggerated fluff,” he commented.
Rothman expressed that while the show might reflect certain truths, it does not accurately represent the day-to-day intelligence and decision-making of industry professionals. “It’s not that we’re fools, although the show might make it seem that way on some occasions. I understood the intended humor, though,” he added, sharing an anecdote about using humor to lighten the atmosphere at a recent CinemaCon event where he jokingly introduced himself as Seth Rogen.
Accurate or Not? Rothman’s Take on Executive Portrayal
Interestingly, Rothman does see some value in how the show depicts the challenges and intentions of studio executives, despite its satirical tone. The series stars Seth Rogen as a newly promoted executive and plays with the contrasting perceptions of such roles, portraying some executives as objects of humor while showing others as committed and humane.
“The series does capture the essential truth that studio executives often aim to do the right thing, facing numerous challenges along the way,” Rothman explained. However, he disagrees with the portrayal of moral compromises, clarifying, “That isn’t the complete picture. Most of us are passionate about films, maintain our integrity, and strive to do our utmost under challenging circumstances.”
“The Studio” has been greenlit for a second season, ensuring that audiences will have more opportunities to peek behind the Hollywood curtain through its satirical lens. The entire first season is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+, while the release date for Season 2 remains unannounced.
