Julian LeFay, 'Father of The Elder Scrolls,' Steps Back From Game Development Due To Cancer

Julian LeFay, the former chief engineer at Bethesda and co-founder of OnceLost Games, has decided to retire from video game development due to his ongoing struggle with cancer, as confirmed by the company yesterday.

Victor Villareal, a producer at OnceLost Games, shared this update in a video. “Julian LeFay, our esteemed technical producer whom many of you know, has been enduring a battle with cancer for a number of years,” Villareal explained. “Despite a valiant fight, it appears he has limited time remaining. He has chosen to step back from our projects to cherish this time with his family and close ones.”

LeFay is widely recognized as the “father of the Elder Scrolls” franchise. He joined Bethesda Softworks shortly after its inception in 1987 and served as Chief Engineer during the development of seminal titles such as The Elders Scrolls: Arena, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, and Battlespire. The character Julianos, the God of Wisdom and Logic in The Elder Scrolls series, is named in honor of LeFay.

Over the years, LeFay has been involved in various gaming projects and in 2019, he co-founded OnceLost Games alongside former Bethesda colleagues Ted Peterson and Vijay Lakshman. Their studio has been focused on developing The Wayward Realms, a game considered a spiritual successor to Daggerfall.

Ted Peterson recently wrote about his long-standing relationship with LeFay, sharing his thoughts in the description of the announcement video by OnceLost Games.

“Our history is filled with stories of our friendship and recent collaboration at OnceLost Games, where we served as creative and technical directors on the Wayward Realms project,” Peterson commented. “However, the pressing matter is Julian’s fight with cancer. His doctors have sadly informed us that we are nearing the time to bid farewell to an industry icon.”

Peterson has called on fans to send their thoughts, prayers, and memories, or simply to share the influence LeFay has had on their lives.

“This situation is incredibly personal to me, and I regret not spending more time with Julian, who is among the most charismatic, intelligent, humorous, and fascinating individuals I’ve known,” Peterson expressed. “This motivates me even more to honor his legacy.”

Peterson concluded with a quote from LeFay, spoken during their last team meeting: “It is personal. And if it’s not personal, then you’re just doing work for hire and you’ll never be driven to achieve something truly significant.”
