Neil Druckmann Steps Back from HBO’s The Last of Us
Neil Druckmann, the head of Naughty Dog, has declared that he will not be participating in the creative process for the third season of HBO’s The Last of Us. Druckmann has decided to dedicate his efforts entirely to the development of a new game titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This announcement was shared on Naughty Dog’s social media platforms, including a tweet that can be viewed [here](https://twitter.com/Naughty_Dog/status/1940465773639880781?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw).
In his statement, Druckmann expressed, “Making the choice to leave my creative role in The Last of Us on HBO wasn’t easy. Having completed Season 2 and with Season 3 still in the early stages, now seemed like the perfect moment to shift my focus entirely to Naughty Dog and our upcoming projects. This includes taking on the roles of writer and director for our next exciting game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, while also fulfilling my duties as Studio Head and Head of Creative.”
Druckmann reflected on his time with the HBO series, stating, “Co-creating this show has been a major career milestone. It was truly an honor to collaborate with Craig Mazin to executive produce, direct, and write the first two seasons. I am immensely grateful for the dedication and thoughtful approach the talented cast and crew brought to adapting The Last of Us Part I and continuing with The Last of Us Part II.”
Craig Mazin to Lead Season 3 Writing
The Ankler reported that Craig Mazin will take over as the lead writer for Season 3, having previously co-written the first two seasons with Druckmann. This change comes as Druckmann returns to concentrate on game development, particularly following the December 2024 announcement of Naughty Dog’s new project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, at The Game Awards. Druckmann revealed that while this new game is his main focus, he is also involved as a producer in another unannounced project at Naughty Dog, where he provides guidance and oversight.
Meanwhile, HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us has seen tremendous success. According to HBO, the second season experienced a significant increase in viewership, with the series’ total global audience reaching over 90 million by the end of Season 1. However, they noted that the viewership for the Season 2 finale was lower due to its release over Memorial Day weekend.
Potential Future Seasons
While Season 3 of The Last of Us is officially in progress, it may not be the conclusion of the series. Mazin has expressed the necessity of a fourth season, and the series’ composer hinted in a recent podcast that at least two more seasons are expected. It remains uncertain whether Druckmann would return in a creative capacity for a potential fourth season.
Critics have praised HBO’s The Last of Us, with Season 1 receiving a 9/10 for being “a stunning adaptation that should thrill newcomers and enrich those already familiar with Joel and Ellie’s journey alike.” Season 2, however, received a slightly lower score of 7/10, described as “still good, but a sequel that struggles because it tells only half of the story.”
