Michael Cera Says He Turned Down a Role in ‘Harry Potter’ Spinoff ‘Fantastic Beasts’: ‘I Had a Big Fear’ That ‘I Would Get Too Famous’

Michael Cera once had the opportunity to enter the magical realm of the Wizarding World.

During a recent conversation on Louis Theroux’s podcast, the actor known for his roles in “Superbad” and “Scott Pilgrim” revealed that he was considered for a role in the “Harry Potter” spinoff series “Fantastic Beasts.” However, he declined the offer due to concerns about the level of fame it might bring.

“I’m not sure if I was officially offered the role; I think I just chose not to pursue it because it looked like it might be a commitment of around six years. I also made a deliberate decision to try to manage my public exposure more carefully,” Cera explained. “I was particularly worried about the impact of starring in movies targeted towards younger audiences and becoming excessively famous.”

“Fantastic Beasts” serves as a prequel to the widely celebrated “Harry Potter” films. It follows the adventures of Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne), a magizoologist who teams up with a young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) to thwart the sinister plans of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Initially portrayed by Johnny Depp and later by Mads Mikkelsen in the third installment, the series achieved significant box office success. Despite this, and J.K. Rowling’s vision of a five-film saga, future developments remain uncertain.

Recently appearing in his first film directed by Wes Anderson, titled “The Phoenician Scheme,” Cera mentioned that his views on fame have slightly shifted. He now feels more open to participating in big film franchises than before.

“That feeling has somewhat diminished over time,” he added. “Now, if an interesting franchise opportunity came up, I wouldn’t just walk out based on it being a major series.”

When asked about the possibility of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cera humorously remarked that he would only consider roles that align with his interests, such as “a superhero who is a big fan of dairy.”
