Until Dawn Movie Adaptation Releases On Digital, 4K Blu-Ray Preorders Are Live

Video game adaptations into movies are often unpredictable, but “Until Dawn” stands out by creatively incorporating elements from the game’s unique choose-your-own-adventure style. If you didn’t catch it in theaters, “Until Dawn” is now available for home viewing. It’s possible to rent or purchase the digital version on Prime Video for $20-$25. For those who prefer owning a physical copy, the 4K Blu-ray combo pack of “Until Dawn” can be preordered from Amazon and Walmart, with a release scheduled for July 8.

“Until Dawn” marks the third video game film adaptation by PlayStation Productions, following the releases of “Uncharted” and “Gran Turismo.” Established in 2019, the production company is also responsible for the television adaptations of “Twisted Metal” and HBO’s highly praised series “The Last of Us.”

In case you haven’t seen it, “Until Dawn” presents an original narrative within the same universe as the video game. The connection between the video game and the film is personified by Dr. Hill, portrayed by actor Stormare, who appears in both forms. In a similar vein to the game, the movie features the main characters trapped in a time-loop, repeatedly facing their demise through various horrific methods. The only escape from this deadly recurrence is to survive until the break of dawn. While the film has received a mix of reviews, it offers a fun mix of horror and comedy with sharp direction, making “Until Dawn” a film worth watching if you enjoy the genre.

The game itself is also available on PS5, now enhanced with a “cinematic update” that includes better visuals and sound design. Rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, it features updated character models, environments, interactive props, visual effects, and animations, along with artistic improvements. Additional eerie titles from Supermassive Games, the creators behind “Until Dawn,” are also available if you’re interested in more interactive horror experiences.

Uncharted Steelbook Edition | The Last of Us Season 1 Steelbook Edition

PlayStation Productions has already launched three films: the 2022 “Uncharted” adaptation, the 2023 “Gran Turismo” release, and now “Until Dawn.” Yet, its most successful project is “The Last of Us,” which concludes its second season this Sunday, May 26. PlayStation Productions is also developing several other adaptations, including a reboot of the “Resident Evil” series set for 2026, “Horizon Zero Dawn,” “Ghost of Tsushima,” and a sequel to “Uncharted.”

Even before PlayStation Productions was established, there were movies and TV shows based on PlayStation games, including “Ratchet & Clank” and “Heavenly Sword,” which saw a new Blu-ray release last year. Although not a PlayStation franchise, the animated movie “Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children” acted as a sequel to the beloved PS1 game by Square Enix.

Currently, most film and TV adaptations of PlayStation video games are available on Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray. “The Last of Us Season 1” recently launched a Steelbook Edition, and “Uncharted’s” Steelbook Edition includes a replica of Nathan Drake’s ring/necklace. The “Gran Turismo” Steelbook Edition is exclusive to Walmart and offers the 1080p Blu-ray version.

Fans of Nintendo can indulge in the 1993 “Super Mario Bros.” live-action film, now available in a limited 30th Anniversary remaster on 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray at Amazon. The standard edition is currently out of stock, but orders are still being accepted. For the 4K edition, you might need to select “Other sellers on Amazon” to find an option fulfilled directly by Amazon.

Meanwhile, Walmart offers an exclusive Limited Edition Steelbook of the 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, which remains the most successful video game film adaptation to date. While “A Minecraft Movie” might not surpass it, it has the potential to become the second adaptation to achieve a billion-dollar box office milestone. You can preorder A Minecraft Movie’s 4K Steelbook Edition for $38 at Amazon, and Walmart offers an exclusive edition featuring a package that mimics the game’s Crafting Table.
