Minecraft Movie Director Spent Time Recovering From How Bad The First Teaser Was

The Minecraft Movie is creating a sensation at the box office and is on track to become one of the top films of the year. Its director, Jared Hess, who initially gained fame with his indie breakthrough Napoleon Dynamite nearly two decades ago, was already an enthusiast of Minecraft before he took on the directorial role. Despite his familiarity with the game, the scale of the project and the initial backlash from fans following the release of the first teaser were overwhelming challenges for him.

In a conversation with Deadline about various aspects of Minecraft and the fate of the Napoleon Dynamite statue, Hess revealed that releasing the teaser was the most challenging phase, one from which he felt he needed to recover. “The teaser lacked sufficient context and featured many visual effects that were still under development. The aftermath required a significant amount of time to manage,” Hess explained. “Nevertheless, we maintained our focus throughout. It’s crucial not to get lost in every Reddit comment and allow those to influence the film’s direction.”

Hess was confident about the movie’s potential, but it was only after the initial teaser and subsequent marketing efforts that the audience began to perceive the film as Hess envisioned it.

“Luckily, we had been conducting test screenings, so we were aware of what was resonating with the audience. Once we started to release promotional materials that accurately represented the film’s tone, perceptions started to shift. From there, it was a smooth sail,” Hess noted.

The Minecraft Movie smashed records during its opening weekend, outperforming major hits like Barbie and The Dark Knight. It broke box office records by earning $163 million in the U.S. alone and has amassed a total of $323 million globally to date. This spectacular debut makes it the most successful opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
