Loco Films has acquired the global distribution rights for “The Man Who Saw the Bear,” marking the eagerly awaited return to directing by legendary French actor Pierre Richard. This film is set to have its global debut at the Cannes Film Festival during the Special Screenings segment, celebrating Richard’s illustrious career in what is anticipated to be a standout event of the festival’s 78th run.
At 90 years old, Richard remains vigorous and continues to be revered for his seminal roles in 1970s French comedies like “The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe,” “La Chèvre,” and “The Fugitives.”
“The Man Who Saw the Bear” not only features Richard in a starring role but also marks his first venture into directing since his successful 1997 film “Distracted.”

The film is a production by Moby Dick Films, known for “Trois amies,” and features performances by Gustave Kervern, a celebrated actor-director recognized at Berlin for “Effacer l’historique,” and Timi-Joy Marbot, known for his role in “Giant with Feet of Clay.”
At the heart of the film is the unique friendship between Grégoire and Michel, two characters from different generations who find common ground in their mutual appreciation for nature and their caring relationship with a bear that has escaped from a circus.
ARP, also present at Cannes with Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague” in the competition category, plans to release Richard’s film this fall.

Despite receiving a Cesar Honorary Award in 2006, Richard’s extensive career and influence in French cinema and popular culture have garnered surprisingly few accolades in France. Comedy, often viewed as a lesser genre at French award ceremonies, is only now beginning to gain recognition. For example, this year Artus, a comedian who directed “A Little Something Extra” — France’s top-grossing film of 2024 — received a nomination for best first film at the Cesar Awards.
