Will “Thunderbolts” Make a Box Office Blast?

Disney’s new Marvel superhero film, “Thunderbolts,” is expected to pull in between $70 million and $75 million during its debut weekend, injecting much-needed energy into cinemas following the success of “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners.” On a global scale, “Thunderbolts” is anticipated to garner between $160 million and $175 million by the end of the weekend.

These projections are somewhat modest compared to other recent Marvel Cinematic Universe releases; “Captain America: Brave New World” launched in February with $88 million over the weekend, reaching $100 million during the extended Presidents’ Day weekend and amassing $192.4 million worldwide. Before this, only three Marvel films since the pandemic — “Eternals” in 2021 ($71 million), “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($75 million), and “The Marvels” in 2023 ($46 million) — had openings under $100 million. In contrast, major releases like “Deadpool & Wolverine” in 2024 ($221 million), “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in 2023 ($118 million), “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ($181 million), and “Thor: Love and Thunder” in 2022 ($144 million) ranked among the highest openings of their respective years.

Produced at a cost of $180 million and marketed with around $100 million, “Thunderbolts” comes at a slightly lower expense than its Marvel predecessors. Nonetheless, this latest blockbuster must maintain a longer presence in theaters compared to “Captain America: Brave New World” to cover its substantial costs. Despite a strong start, “Brave New World” saw a quick decline in ticket sales in the following weeks, ending with a global total of $414 million, which wasn’t enough to avoid a financial loss. “Thunderbolts” aims to revitalize the once indomitable comic book movie genre, which has recently seen a downturn. This summer, Marvel plans to release “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” on July 25, while Warner Bros. and DC will introduce a new “Superman” movie on July 11.

“Thunderbolts” stars a group of antiheroes including Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, and David Harbour as Red Guardian. These characters are united on a perilous mission. Marvel announced in March that most of the cast would reprise their roles for “Avengers: Doomsday” in 2026, potentially increasing interest in “Thunderbolts.”

As the sole new release this weekend, “Thunderbolts” is poised to dominate the box office charts. However, “Sinners” is set to continue its strong performance, expected to drop just 20% in its third weekend, with projected earnings of $35 million. The R-rated vampire thriller, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, has so far collected $123 million domestically and $163 million globally.
