Season 2 of The Last of Us Welcomes Kaitlyn Dever as Abby
The second season of The Last of Us is set to introduce a pivotal new character, Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. As with all adaptations, certain modifications are necessary to appropriately transition the story from one medium to another, and Abby’s narrative is no exception in this upcoming season.
In the original game, Abby’s character is first revealed through a cinematic sequence, as noted by GamesRadar, before the gameplay shifts to allow the player to control Abby. This gameplay mechanic helps establish a direct emotional connection with her, according to series writer Neil Druckmann in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
However, the non-interactive nature of television necessitated a different approach in the show, including adjustments to the timeline. In the game, the exploration of Abby’s backstory unfolds following a significant event, and only then does the narrative backtrack to share her perspective. The television adaptation presents this background information earlier to the audience.
“We have the option to delay certain revelations and create mysteries to be disclosed later in the series. This wasn’t an option with the show since viewers aren’t controlling Abby directly. Thus, we needed a different approach to provide that immediate context,” Druckmann explained. He further elaborated on the necessity of this change: “Adhering too closely to the game’s timeline would mean a long wait for viewers to receive this context, potentially spoiling the experience between seasons. Hence, it seemed appropriate to adjust the timeline and provide this context from the start.”
Showrunner Craig Mazin has hinted at significant alterations to the timeline for Season 2 in previous discussions.
“We’ve definitely played with the timeline as it was presented in the original material… we’ve tweaked it in ways we felt suited the television format best,” Mazin reported to Entertainment Weekly. He described these changes as “scientifically determined” to maximize narrative impact.
