A New Adaptation of Aladdin Is On The Way — And This Time, They're Going Full Horror

We are entering an era where new adaptations are blossoming, and the latest to join the trend is a fresh take on the classic Middle Eastern tale of Aladdin. Dubbed Aladdin: The Monkey’s Paw, this new project is set to kick off its production next month. However, it is important to note that this will not be a recreation of the cheerful 1992 Disney version many have come to cherish.

Promoted as a “dark, supernatural reimagining” of the traditional story, the upcoming live-action film features an impressive cast including Nick Sagar, Ricky Norwood, Montana Manning, and Bradley Stryker, with Stryker also overseeing the production and direction. The screenplay, penned by Charley McDougall, will be brought to life in the UK, setting the stage for this intriguing adaptation.

According to a synopsis released by Deadline, the plot centers around a modern-day Londoner named Aladdin who comes into possession of an ancient monkey’s paw that can supposedly fulfill wishes. He soon learns, however, that each wish comes with a devastating price as a sinister force begins to wreak havoc, exploiting the desires of those who wield the paw.

The film’s creators have a particular interest in blending horror with a personal narrative. “Our goal was to delve into horror through a deeply personal narrative, focusing not just on the frights but also on the emotional toll of desires,” the film’s writer shared with the media. “This story has haunted us for some time, and we’re ready to unleash it. The most impactful horror movies linger with you, and that’s what we aim for with this story. It’s incisive, emotional, and replete with a sense of dread that fits perfectly. We’re crafting not just a film but an entire world centered around a captivating concept. The paw, its mythology, and the characters—it’s all comprehensive.”

While Disney’s 1992 animated Aladdin remains the most famous and adored adaptation of the folktale, the story has seen numerous cinematic versions over the years, spanning both animated and live-action formats, and in various languages. The most recent of these is the 2019 live-action version starring Naomi Scott from Smile 2.

As of now, no release date has been set for this horror-infused interpretation of Aladdin, but the anticipation is certainly building.
