While Thailand may be worlds apart from the magical universe of Hogwarts, Jason Isaacs, currently starring in The White Lotus Season 3, recently shared his intriguing casting suggestion for Lucius Malfoy in the anticipated HBO Harry Potter series.

During a recent interview with Variety about The White Lotus, Isaacs, who also lends his voice to What If…?, proposed Meryl Streep for the role of Lucius Malfoy.

“She’s capable of anything, that woman. There really are no bounds to her talents.” Streep has previously demonstrated her versatility by playing a male character; she depicted several roles in HBO’s Angels in America mini-series, including an elderly male rabbi, showcasing her ability to transcend gender in her performances.

Nevertheless, Isaacs offered no specific guidance to Streep or anyone who might fill his former role. “I have no advice to give. Why should I?” he commented. “I’m aware of some of the actors they’re considering. They are all remarkable talents. It’s bound to be a success, and they hardly need suggestions from someone like me,” he added, humorously referring to himself as an “old fart.”

Isaacs first portrayed the sinister Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the series’ second film, and continued the role through to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

As for the new series, John Lithgow has been confirmed to play Albus Dumbledore, a role originally undertaken by Richard Harris and later by Michael Gambon. Casting for other key roles such as Severus Snape and Minerva McGonagall, originally played by Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith respectively, appears to be nearing completion. Reports suggest that Paapa Essiedu of Black Mirror fame is likely to be cast as Snape, and Janet McTeer, known for her role in Jessica Jones, as McGonagall, though no official announcements have been made yet.
