In recent news, “Stranger Things” actress Sadie Sink is set to make her entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Spider-Man movie. This has sparked widespread speculation about the role she will play.

Theories are abundant, not just among us but across the entire online community. Everyone is eager to guess which character Sink will embody in the much-anticipated Spider-Man 4.

A popular but somewhat dismissed theory is that Sink could portray the iconic Mary Jane Watson, a suggestion that stems from her red hair. However, as one fan pointed out on Reddit, “Michelle Jones is the MCU’s real MJ,” a sentiment echoed by many. Yet, it’s worth considering that the studio might cast Sink as Mary Jane in a “bold attempt to win back traditional Spider-Man fans.” Remember, the expected isn’t always what’s best.

Since 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Zendaya has filled the role of MJ, diverging from the traditional red-haired Mary Jane of the comics and earlier films. Despite this shift, modern fans have largely embraced her portrayal. It’s rumored that Zendaya will at least make a cameo in this upcoming, yet-to-be-titled follow-up to No Way Home.

Another possibility being discussed is Sink stepping into the shoes of Gwen Stacy. Given the existence of wigs, this isn’t far-fetched. One user expressed mixed feelings about this, noting “much to the surprise (and possibly dismay) of everyone,” referencing how Emma Stone previously portrayed this role in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man series. They added, “I definitely have no interest in seeing Spider-Gwen right now,” reflecting a desire for new storylines instead of revisiting familiar narratives.

Spider-Gwen remains prominent within the animated Spider-Verse, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, and fans seem content to keep following her story there. With the significant history between Peter and Gwen in Webb’s films still resonating with fans, many hope for fresh adventures in the Spider-Man universe, potentially offering Sink a novel role.

Discussing other theories, some speculate that Sink could portray Jean Grey, or Phoenix, from the X-Men, previously played by Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner. While some find this choice “too obvious,” others think it “weird to introduce [her] in SM4.” There’s also skepticism about debuting a core X-Men member in a Spider-Man-centric movie.

However, the prevailing theory is that Sink might play Firestar, a lesser-known redhead mutant known as Angelica Jones, who appears in X-Men and the 1981 series Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. This could be the “something different” that might make her inclusion successful, with many fans excited about potentially reviving the Amazing Friends dynamic. One fan commented, “She’ll be a college student alongside Peter and their friend/partner Bobby Drake. They’ll all live in the same apartment too,” envisioning “the adaptation of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends we’ve all been waiting for.”

Firestar began as a Spider-Man character and later joined forces with the New Mutants and Avengers. Given her backstory, she could be a perfect fit for the MCU. While there’s still discussion, such as one fan’s remark, “If Firestar, why not Jean?“, the excitement is palpable. Ultimately, only time will reveal who Sink will portray in her MCU debut.
